Yeh, My dad is always saying "Save your money in a bank account." I tell him that I want to open an account but I want a way to spend that money anytime I need to without paying a visit to a bank. Then I thought about debit cards. Do you have to be 18 to get one?

You don't need to be 18 as long as it is a joint account. I opened a joint account with my mother when I was 13 and it became my account when I was 18. Ask your dad to go with you to the bank and open a joint account with you. At most banks you can even set up a spending limit per day or per week, which may make your dad more comfortable with allowing you to have a card.

Another idea is to set aside just 10% of whatever you make each week to put in the account and keep or spend the rest. You still get to spend 90% of your money, and you get to impress your dad/get him off your back.

He is giving you good advice though, if you start saving money when you are younger and don't have much it becomes a habit that will help you out when you're older and have more money to possibly waste.

I can tell you that if your banking in canada you dont need to be 18 to get a debit card. I totally understand your dad wanting the money in a safe spot where it will earn interest (if thats what your interested in check out ING, google it, its a savings account place and they have the highest interest, its 4.250 right now i think and its no fees) but I also know you want access to your cash should the need arise.
Most banks TD for one, will give you a debit card when you open an account for you to use with the account, not many banks are all paper and no plastic. Its just faster for the banks to give you a card.
So now that we've established that you will get a card regardless, now we need to talk about bank fees. Most places will charge you sometimes per transaction (everytime you make a debit purchase), depending on your account, sometimes its $1.50 a transaction. Make sure to read the fine print before locking your money up in the bank.
The good thing is becuz your so young most banks will put you on a student account, which is better interest and less fees.
Check out a couple of banks before committing to one!

If you are under 18, then you will net a parent's signature to open an account. That parent and yourself will both be on the account. Once the account is open, you will recieve an ATM card in the mail, not a debit card. It will not have a Mastercard or Visa logo on the card. It will only be used to get money out of an ATM machine.

are you talking about a atm or a debt card both cards you need to be 18 and have a checking or a savings account but if you have one of your parents own the account with you until you turn 18 you can get one of these cards but both you and your parent will be legally responsible for this account.

Sorry, unless you are of legal age you cannot sign a contract which is required. However, with your dad and proper id you both can open one and you can, in most states anyway, you can get a debit card. Hope this helps

Yes you have to be 18 to enter into a legal contract
IE: loans credit card etc

You can have your parents get you a prepaid credit card
it has no legal liabilites as a debit card would
you can't overdraw a prepaid card
