I lived in Queens a very long time before upgrading to Manhattan and can tell you that Kew Gardens is a relatively safe neighborhood, but it is primarily an orthodox Jewish enclave. That being said, if you are not an orthodox Jew, prepare to be excluded by the community and looked upon as an outsider. Also, in Kew Gardens there is Forest Park which has a history of being a notorious drug spot and gay prostitiution spot. The commute is an hour at least and unless you live near Queens Blvd., you will probably have to pay two fares to get where you gotta go (or walk)
Sunnyside was once a great place and then fell into neglect as many neighborhoods did. The old families moved out and only recently are hard-working folks returning to the neighborhood. Commuting is better here as its closer to Queens Blvd. and of course Manhattan. Perhaps not as safe as Kew Gardens, its a neighborhood in transition, primarily Asians and Latinos with some whites and blacks mixed in there as well.
I never lived in Brooklyn before but can tell you its reputation should be taken lightly. Many old neighborhoods that were rough are now trendy and only the roughest of the rough (East New York, Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, Crown Heights) should be avoided)
As far as Queens goes, i wouldnt live in Jamaica, anything near JFK or LaGuardia Airports, any neighborhood on the Brooklyn/Queens border, or some parts of Long Island City. These neighborhoods are improving, but still leave much to be desired

theres nothing to be afraid of anywhere in ny. i mean, seriously, the only reason that all these bad things happen to people is because they are walking alone in the dark. so, living in long island city or sunnyside would be nice, because it is near many trains and also close to manhattan. kew gardens is a very nice neighborhood, which, like somebody mentioned is filled with orthodox jews. be ready to pay about $1,000(give or take $300) a month of rent for a studio apartment though.

You should look into Astoria, Long Island City or Greenpoint Brooklyn. All three are easy commutes in Manhattan. Kew Gardens is nice yet it's a longer commute. Sunnyside has improved over the years.

Kew Gardens is pretty much safe, but I heard that it is not very safe to go outside late. Well... I think it's never good to be out very late. However, Kew Gardens seems to be a very friendly neighborhood and the most "busy" place in Queens so far that's what I see.
