Do lobsters really scream when you put them into a pot of boiling water? If they do, how long do they usually scream for?

there is a noise, but lobsters cannot actually scream...they have no voicebox. It is believed to be the sopund of steam escaping small pores in their shell, and it doesn't last long....if you're concerned for the lobster, simply give him a warm water soak until he sleeps before tossing him into boiling water, he'll be dead before he wakes up. HONEST.

Boiling Lobsters

Fill a (very) large pot 1/4 to 1/3 full (or enough water to completely cover the lobster when you place it in the pot) of seawater (1st choice or salted water is choice #2). Allow about 2 to 2 1/2 quarts of water per lobster.

Bring the water to boil. Put your live lobster(s) in head first, one at time, into the rapidly boiling water. Bring water to a second boil. Cover the pot and boil for 15 minutes. Remove from the water immediately, and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process.

When lobsters have cooled down enough to handle, you are ready to eat.

* Adding 3 tablespoons of table vinegar will help insure tenderness.

Cooking Test: Lobster meat should be pure white, opaque and elastic. Walking legs will pull out easily from the body. Tomalley will be green and firm. Roe (found in some female lobsters) will be bright red and firm. If it is black and oily the lobster is undercooked.

Storage Time Recommendations

Uncooked Refrigerated Storage Time: 24 Hours

Cooked Refrigerated Storage Time: 3-4 days

Cooked Frozen Storage time: 2-3 Months
bullet Buy active, live lobsters weighing from 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 pounds. Allow for 1/2 large lobster or 1 small lobster per person per serving. Bigger is not always better, lobsters weighing 3 pounds and over are apt to be coarse and tough.

bullet When using lobster meat in recipes-Two live 1 lb. lobsters will yield about 1/2 to 3/4 cup cooked meat.

bullet Place live lobster in a shallow dish, covered with a damp towel, in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Cook within one day of purchase.

bullet The claws should be plugged with a small piece of wood and/or held together with rubber bands. If they are not….BE CAREFUL!

bullet Before cooking, test to make sure your lobsters are active and that the tail snaps back if it is stretched out flat when you pick up the lobster - the tail should not droop. Grasp it firmly at the back; rinse claws, body and back under a faucet.

bullet Leftover lobster (if there is such a thing) should be refrigerated or frozen immediately.

bullet NEVER FREEZE UNCOOKED LOBSTER!

NO, they don't scream. Their shells are sealed, so what you are hearing may be air escaping from the dead lobster's body. But I've never even heard that! Just eat it and enjoy it.

There is a noise, but they aren't screaming. It's steam escaping from under the shell. It doesn't always happen, but when it does its less than a minute or so.
