While any amount of working out helps, 20 minutes isn't really enough time to raise your heartrate enough to make a cardio impact. It's best to go for at least 30 minutes, but aim for about 60 minutes.
I usually do about 25 minutes of weights, either free weights, or machines, or both.
Then I move on to cardio, usually around 45 minutes. I always switch between the elliptical, the seated bike, and the treadmill, although one of my favorite machines is the "Wave" which mimics roller blading (major cardio workout there!).
Once I'm done with the cardio and the cooldown, I spend about 5-10 minutes of stretching. Research has shown that stretching after a workout is more effective than doing it before a workout.
Also, it's best to change up your workout every month. It takes two weeks for your body to adjust to a new workout, and another two weeks for your body to "settle" into the workout. By changing it up every month, you are keeping your body in a constant state of change, making it work harder since you're doing a new workout. Even if you change something little like doing more reps on weights, or reversing your routine, or adding another weight machine. Every little bit counts.

It all depends on what you would like from your workout. If you want to lose fat off your body, I would suggest that 30 minutes be your minimum, and really work hard too! You might want to change it up too, you could do some days on the treadmill on the incline, some days elliptical, do the bike every now and then and the cross trainer too. Hope this helps..

i used to stay on them for around 40-50 minutes, but that was my whole workout. i would burn like 500 calories. just skip everything else and do eliptical only and your legs will start lookin hot.
