Actually both are very right and these other bumpkins know nothing about Magick. Now, since you cast the spell during the Mercury Retrograde it would be like tossing a stone into a huge gorge, your not going to hear it hit bottom. Pick the corresponding day again and recast it and trust it will come to be. Sometimes a specific spell requires you to cast on the corresponding hour. Which in itself takes some mathematical equations to do, figuring in Sunrise and Sunset if your working with the sun energies, however if you are working with the moons energies, which are more powerful, you will need to figure in the moon rise and moon set hours.

How you view "spell work" is going to determine outcome to a large degree. If you view it as projecting a personal "thought form" into the future to affect/effect probability and create opportunity I suspect you will find that it works pretty well. Think on that some as it can be critical. Several paradigms advise the "fire and forget" approach for no other reason than to keep from tinkering with the original intent. The people who use this have a tendency to keep journals as personal reminders and an attitude of "I did it and it's going to work. Next?"
Now a lot of people are going to object to this. At the subconscious level they feel the "magick user" is taking an unfair advantage. Actually the mage is putting something into motion that he or she will probably have to follow up on some time in the future. It's the beginning of good planning and good planners have always had an advantage.
Finally, a way of viewing the Universe is that everything that occurs in it is natural. This being true the "supernatural" does not exist. Don't expect "miracles". Anticipate probabilities and do your spell work with those in mind.

i am of the trust the spell and wait philosophy. while i understand that the planets and all of those things affect spells, i believe it is better to have right intent and a focused mind and heart as the first and most important thing.
i practice alot of kitchen magic, so i do so when it feels right - and let it do its thing.

If you want to get a decent answer, try focusing your question to specifically witches or pagans. It will attract their attention and you will get fewer haters.

The only reasonable realistic expectation is eternal punishment.
--------------------------------------
Airborne 101 forgot to mention the other Supernatural force here on earth, that is God, whom we talk to in prayer, grow in through Scripture and the Sacraments.
The promise of spells and what they can and do provide are just cheep empty thrills compared to the promise of eternal salvation .
The cost of spells is eternal punishment; the cost of eternal salvation is Nothing, it is a gift freely offered, and freely given.

The realistic expectations are that nothing whatsoever will happen. Spells do not work.
