Eastern Market is great! Lots of small stores and coffee shops. And it's on the metro line :)

You might check out the Penn Quarter - Teaism is not a coffee shop, but a great tea shop, and a good place for a stop. Nearby great entertainment includes the theatre at the Landsburgh (Shakespeare) until the end of July.

Check out the Kennedy Center - there is a free performance every day at 6 PM. Get there early - the kind of performance varies wildly, check out their schedule.

There is comedy in the district, the Improv, near the Farragut metro stations (Farragut west on blue and orange line, Farragut North on red).

Live music can also be had in the Adams Morgan neighborhood (Madam's Organ, Heaven and Hell) and in Old Town Alexandria (Tiffany Tavern (bluegrass) and others).

The Navy Band has a weekly concert at the Navy Memorial, and Air Force and Army Bands, as well as Marines, have free concerts over the summer. This is not just band music, but also classical, choral, jazz, and rock, depending on the ensemble performing.

You might also check out the spy museum, and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, or a visit to the Bureau of Engraving and printing. Make sure you consider Smithsonian museums off the mall - the Postal Museum, Anacostia Museum, Renwick Gallery, and the American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery.

For shopping, Georgetown, also Adams Morgan and DuPont Circle, if you want a mall go to Pentagon City.

There is lots more, but this is a start.

The 9:30 Club usually has some pretty cool shows, but it depends on when you're there. Check out their website to see who's playing

You'll find plenty of shopping downtown. Do you count all the monuments and stuff as "historical stuff"? It's touristy, but the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument are pretty cool. If you're looking for side vendors or entertainment, just go to the mall (not the shopping mall.. "the mall")

The Zoo is awesome, but you'll have to go a little outside the city

Have a good time!

Georgetown is probably the best for shopping if you are looking to stay within the District itself. You can catch a "Circulator" bus at Union Station that will take you to Georgetown as the subway does not go there. Check out (http://www.dccirculator.com/) for schedules and routes.

Union Station has shopping and is a nice building to visit. Check out (http://www.unionstationdc.com/shopping.asp) for information.

The Old Post Office Pavillion, which is right downtown, has shops and places to eat. It also has the bell tower which offers some of the best views of the city. Check out (http://www.oldpostofficedc.com/).

For a nice change on the "coffee shop" check out Love Cafe - a cup cake bar. See (http://lovecafe.cakelove.com/menu.php).

It can be a little boring for younger kids. When I went I went to the spy musuem, watched the bums sleep until noon, checked out the stores, ate at the amazing italian restraunts, go for a walk and well everything else is historic. But the white house is awesome. Oh and you can go to the washington nationals baseball game. If you are lucky you can see the prez fly in his helicopter or the vice prez in his limo. HAVE FUN!!!

Check out Georgetown and Union Station in DC.
You might also like to check out Old Town Alexandria - - a short drive from DC and accessible via Metro.

Georgetown has the best shops and food places. I suggest you take some bus tours that are really cheap. they take you everywhere.
