My dog had 3 broken ribs and the vet did not take xrays. If they had hurt a lung would she have already died? I am worried and she if fine most of the time (she is on pain medication) but sometimes she seems to be breathing weird is that normal? It has been 2 days.

Thank you. It was a bad deal. She never liked this guy I was very close friends with (and in love with). But he kept pushing her and she bit him. And he broke them. I don't know how, I was in the shower. Talk about heartbrake in more than one way from my dog having to go through it and finding out how he was after a year of being so close to him.

unfortunately, you can't bandage up broken ribs. you don't even do that for humans.
I dont know about the breathing weird thing. She probably would have fluids in her lungs along with blood if the ribs did pierce her lungs or heart ( if it was the heart, she would be dead by now)
ask your vet about the breathing thing..

Well, thank heavens you took her to a vet. If she punctured a lung, she would be in extreme pain and she would not be doing fine anytime at all. I am surprised your vet didn't take an x-ray though. Those ribs will hurt and breathing will be difficult for her until they heal. It hurts her every time she takes a breath. Having been there and done that in my younger years, I can truly empathize with your dog. Just keep a close eye on her and do not hesitate to take her back to the vet if she seems to get any worse.

The thing w/ broke ribs is, it's hard to take in a full breath. When you can't take in a full breath, you can't keep your lungs clear. It's likely fluid is building up in her lungs. Especially being on pain medication, shallow breathing is common on pain medications. You should let your vet know about the weird breathing.

The vet should have taken x-rays to check for further damage to the chest. Go to another vet--if she has a collapsed lung or other injury, the sooner you treat it the better. She could also have a diaphragmatic hernia from this type of trauma. They can breathe funny from pain, but I'd get a second opinion.
