Muscle weakness and even temporary paralysis are common side effects of lipitor. The good news is that it is reversible once you stop taking it. I agree, I would not take lipitor. Here is the official Lipitor website with info on side effects:

Wow.... meta-freakin' mucil? So, if my LDL is 320, a good dose of metamucil is going to drop it 50%, right? I doubt it, too. Stop promoting using a substance that has NO data to substantiate its (very) use. To go from 320 to 310 -- using metamucil - will not change the rate or frequency with which I experience a cardiovascular event.
Myalgias (muscle aches/weaknesses) are common with ALL anti-cholesterol medications. If your mother is sensitive to Lipitor, she most likely will be sensitive to other anti-cholesterol medications. Hopefully she isn't.
You might recommend Zetia to your doctor. Zetia is not near as potent as Lipitor (or other brand-named statins), nor does it have any cardiovascular data to substantiate its use (i.e. clinical trials that showed by taking Zetia a person's risk of having a heart attack or stroke was lessened to a significant degree); however, it's better than nothing.
Good luck.

Lipitor can cause myositis in some people ( inflamation and breakdown of the muscles). Your mom should tell your doctor about any muscle pain and ask him whether she should continue taking it. Get a CK blood test done to determine normal muscle pain from the more serious kind.

have your mother discuss this problem with her doctor.
There are two natural treatments that work just as good as any medical for lowering cholesterol. The first is the supplement "red rice yeast" take one capsule four times daily.
The other is using metamucil powder 1tsp. first thing in the morning with a large glass of water and last thing at night.
I have seen this work on so many different clients and they don't suffer any side effects.

This is a common side effect of medications called statins (cholesterol lowering meds). Some people can't take them because of the muscle aches. She needs to let her physician know as soon as possible about this problem. He may need to change her meds.
