Nuts are not an abundant food source and some nut trees only produce nuts every other year so they are somewhat rare which makes them expensive. Nuts can only grow in certain climates. Usually you don't see an abundance of nuts in very cold climates with lots of snow or ice. Less supply plus more demand equals a higher cost to consumers.

It is very labor intensive to harvest nuts and process them. It usually involves a shaker to remove the nuts from the tree. Then you have to have them picked up. Then there is the processing. Some nuts can be sold raw. Most are roasted.
Then there are the nuts like the Macadamia that have to be shelled. It takes about 700 PSI to crack a Mac nut.
All the processing adds to the cost.

I would guess because of the costs involved. The labor,exporting/importing,the years you pay people to maintain the trees without actually producing any nuts, weather conditions ruining your crop etc.

Depending on the Nut you may not get a decent crop for 10 years.

They have to be harvested, shelled, roasted, seasoned, packaged, and advertised. These all have their own labor costs. Also shipping costs before and after they are prepared for consumption.

Ie: The wieght of shipping the raw product (with shells still on) is much higher than the final weight of the product. So as a customer you have to pay for the shells just like the producer does.

Macadamias are my fave... man are they expensive!!
