I just bought this Cockateil from this lady for only $35 but when I brought her home I noticed that she has alot of bald spots and when she stretched out her wings it looks like she has bald spots underneath the wings as well with wounds and some blood!! I dont know what this poor bird has been through or if she has a disease but i sure hope she is ok. She looks happy but is missing alot of her body feathers. Well anyways the lady that gave her to me also gave a container with sand and told me that it's for her to eat. I grew up with my grandparents that bred these beautiful birds and they never gave them sand. Are Cockateils supposed to eat sand? Do you think this could make her sick?

Yikes! She could have a skin condition (mites are very rare in domestic birds), or she was clipped wrong. You might want an avian vet to take a look at her. Tiel's can be feather pickers and a common cause is a parasite called giardia. And no, tiels definitely do NOT need sand or gravel to digest their food. Don't use it.

I even have 2 cockatiels and 2 affection birds. while procuring one, make helpful it is hand fed as a toddler, then it is going to likely be use to the human touch. Be arranged to sparkling up a great variety of mess. Birds are very messy and prefer to throw seed around.

NO DONT GIVE HER SAND THE MITES IN THE SAND COULD VERY WELL CAUSE HER SKIN TO GO DRY. THROW THE SAND AWAY AND SPRAY THE TIEL WITH WATER WITH A SQUIRT BOTTLE ONCE A DAY UNTIL SHES KIND OF WET BUT NOT MUCH. YOU WILL SEE A BIG CHANGE IN HER ALMOST RIGHT AWAY, PLUS SHE MAY HAVE HAD THE BIRD IN WITH OTHERS WHO PICKED ON HER OR SHE MAY HAVE BEEN UNHAPPY PLUCKING HERSELF. JUST TRY THE SPRAYING OF HER WITH WATER FOR A WEEK OR SO AND GET HER USED TO IT (darn caps sorry) Anyhow Keep her sprayed once a day and before long you will see a happier healthier bird for it.

sounds like she is sick. something is wrong with her. I think the lady knew about it and she sold it to you. cockateils cost more then thirty five dollars. I had cockateils and never even heard of giving them sand. I brought them from a pet store and they never mention sand. something does not sound right.

i dont think the bird is dieased. but i could be wrong u need to take it to the vet. birds can not digest sand and it can bind them up. when u get a new bird its always good to get them checked out. it could be sick thats why it was so cheep. plus she could have had it in with other birds that could have picked on him/her. hope iwas helpful
