I have a dog and the former owner says it is half pitbull and maltese. Is this possible, or did she get her breed wrong?

I sure hope not! I wonder if the former owner meant Malamute? If one really was a Maltese, I sure hope it was the sire.

It is possible, but I strongly advise that you proceed with your plan on getting her spayed, and also get the male neutered. "Loving each other to death" is no reason to breed them. Especially since in the canine world, mating is not act of "love" or "pleasure." The world has enough mutts, and by the sounds of that mix, I doubt there would be very many homes willing to take in such a mix. The puppies would also most likely be subjected to a lot of structural defects. This would be because of the mixing of such a large dog to such a small one. I also presume they would be fairly ugly. Not that I enjoy calling any dog ugly, but there are so many variations that could occur depending on the genetics of the dogs. I would think that the structural portion of the dog itself could have many outcomes, which would contribute to the ugliness, (ie, short legs with a pitti/rot type body), also the coat could possibly inherit a rotti/pit colouring with a curly coat, or the maltese colouring with a roti/pit coat. Again, get the dogs altered, and do not let this thought proceed.

can you show a picture? i mean, it guess its possible, its just hard for the mounting and the birth. either the puppies will be too large for the dog (maltese being the mother and the pitbull being the male).

Its possible, but NOT recommended. I would HOPE the mother was the pitbull!

The former owner's probably just guessing what the dog is. It is possible but highly unlikely.
