I am from the east coast, and moved to California last fall. I really enjoy the weather, but based on so many negative factors such as traffic, high costs, pollution, I am wondering if its not worth the hassle. Also, CA residents only make 10% more then people in other states, so its not really relative to what you are paying to live here. I do live in Hollywood, but will be moving in Burbank in a few months. Someday I would like to buy a house, but I dont see it happening here. Thanks

I do think Los Angeles as a county is completely overrated.
But I don't think California is overrated at all. San Diego, Orange County, No. Cali are great places. The weather is incredible, also, you can go surfing, to a themepark, and skiing in one weekend......

I've lived in LA, Orange County and NYC along with Louisiana and Texas....I'd recommend the Orange County in a heartbeat. It;s not super "exciting" but you can relax during the week and go to LA or wherever else on the weekends.

Overall, it depends on what you value...if you care alot about public transportation and an active nightlife....New York is great. But in all honesty, i wouldn't recommend the east coast (new york) to anyone unless you have loads of money! :)

Don't judge California by Los Angeles...

Was born and raised and still live in the South Bay (bout 10mi south of Downtown LA). I love it, even though most of the trash people talk about it has truth such as the traffic, gas prices, housing costs, and lots of rude people. But the way i figure, i'd rather pay more to live where i am, where almost nothing worth seeing is more than an hour or two drive away, than pay a lot less to live in the middle of nowhere or someplace where the weather is more extreme. By the way, you can't judge all of California just by Los Angeles. I mean I could just as easily talk the same trash about New York based solely on impressions from New York City. Where i live in the South Bay is a nice balance of what CA has to offer without being caught up in the drama of LA.

Los Angeles / South Bay native, Love the weather, beaches, Pretty women , and the night life.

But that's it. Houses are very overpriced. I'm trying to buy a second home but cannot afford the 3800 dollar a month payment. I'm just glad I bought my house in 1993. I couldn't afford my house if I bought it today. I'm buying rental property in Texas - Arizona at a fraction of the price!

Taxes, Taxes, and More Taxes! It's a liberal state. Arnold may be a republican, but the state is run by Democrats.

A bad place to get married if you're a guy. A great place if you're a girl.

You will see some of the highest gasoline prices here also. how about 3.78 for premium.

They chase businesses out of the state by overcharging them for permits, fees etc. (See Taxes and Democrats)

The criminals have all the rights, if you shoot one using a firearm you will be prosecuted as if you killed the president.

This state is always Broke. (so they say) We have some of the highest gasoline taxes, outrageous property taxes (1 1/2 percent of a 700,000 home in a marginal neihborhood) Huge fees for pemits and business licenses etc. in the country but they're broke.

Some of the rudest people in the nation live here. very unfriendly. The chicks may be beautiful but most are stuck up. it seems to me the further you get away from Hollywood and the westside, the more grounded the girls are. and they still look good. I like the gals from the Inland Empire myself, but it's too damn hot there in the summer.

Traffic/ bad drivers

But I keep living here, Go figure.

I love California. I've lived here all my life. NYC is just as expensive. I've visited there a couple times within the last 3 years. I like the busy city but I think it's more expensive to live there! My friend used to live there. I don't know how much she paid in rent but it seemed high and she lived in a freaking DUMP! My impression of NYC is that if you like dirty streets, dirty public transportation, dumpy places to live then that's your place!

See... everyone has their own preference. CA is great if you know how to manage your money. Obviously those who are high maintenance and don't know what value of a dollar are the ones who are complaining.

If you're from CA then you're used to the traffic and know that's the way it is and we know how to plan ahead on timing when getting around. It's not that bad. Maybe in Los Angeles areas it's bad... but there are some cities on the ourskirts on LA that don't have as much traffic and congestion. And you have to know the rush hour times. In NYC there's rush hour alll the time! It's a mess! The last time I went to NY was in May of 07 and everywhere I looked there's always some kind of construction or painting or holes somewhere! (I'm not talking about the 9/11 construction...that is understandable) I'm taking about other places. Yeah! That's a lot of fun to see!

And you live in Hollywood! of course everything is expensive. I live in West Covina... not too much city like. buildings are no more than 6 -8 stories. unless it's a hotel 12-15 I guess. NYC has plenty pollution! Hadn't you noticed... you can't even seee the sky there!

I don't know... I hate people who hate on CA... it's really a great place! Full of opportunities!

I grew up here and I think it is way overrated. Ironically, I'm moving to Connecticut within the year...Cali isn't what it used to be. The traffic is making me develop road rage, cost of living makes it impossible for a lot of people to do what there is to do here, pollution...do you mean the people or air =)...I cannot wait to leave! I moved away for a few years a long time ago and ever since I returned I've wanted to leave. I own my home and I'm still leaving!! East Coast here I come! Best of luck with your adjustment here. I'm in San Diego if you want my house =)

I have two relatives who live in CA, and I have to say there is just NO WAY I would even consider living there. No way. With the flood of illegals coming in we haven't even seen the worst yet either. CA is possibly the most screwed up state we have, despite strong competition from Vermont and Massechussets. Last time I was in San Francisco I saw someone go poop on the street. ICK! The place is filthy.

Los Angeles (and the surrounding area) is WAY overrated.

You should check out Northern California (at least visit it). We have probably more expensive real estate, but it is a LOT more pleasant here.
