It depends on the bird. With Budgies, one of the methods used it checking out the color of their cere [right above their beaks, where they're nostrils are.] If it's blue-purple, it's a boy. If it's beige/earth tones, it's a female. Some cases, it's very difficult to determine. Sometimes size plays a part, as does if it sings. Male canaries sing, whereas females don't.

What kind of bird is it? Sometimes there's no way to tell without a DNA test.

I had a quaker and thought it was a boy.....He laid eggs one day so haha....chico was chica.

They can x-ray to see how wide the pelvis is....the wide one is female.

You can try feeling the bone structure...if it seems wide then its a girl.

if it is a parakeet above the two holes, if it is blue, it is a boy and if it is lighter it is a girl. if they are very young you cannot tell right away.
