I'm going to NYC next year for school and I won't have a room mate, plus the school I'm going to doesn't have dorms. I can only afford about 1k a month for rent and was wondering where I could possibly live that's nice and not scary, considering I'm a pretty small female. Is there a region where I could possibly just get an apartment, like in a complex and not a private house? I know I won't be able to afford Manhattan but perhaps Long Island or Staten Island where ever it is I need something close to a train.

Alina I will say try downtown Brooklyn. 5 minutes from Manhattan in a car and 25 on public transportation. More diverse, safe, and cultural. $1000 should get you something but dont think it will be huge. That will get you a large studio or a small one bedroom. But its location location location. You will never want to leave. (Park Slope 7th avenue area) Alina you wont regret it, and will be the envy of all your visiting friends..

For one Staten Island and Long Island are not the best choices if you're going to be commuting into the city for school.....why don't you try Roommates.com.....maybe you can put your money together and stay somewhere really nice in the city.....and for two It doesn't really matter where you live in or around NYC it's a very small place with lots of people so it's not the safest place on earth no matter where you live.....I think you should do the roommate thing that way you'll have a NYC Guide that knows the areas and can help you out.....but pick like you pick your fruit be careful

Good Luck!

We don't generally call them apartment "complexes" here, more "buildings" (because it's a single medium-to-large building rather than small buildings ringing a parking lot), but there are plenty. It makes much more sense to find roommates than to try to swing your own place, due to the expense (it's also generally safer to live with a roommate). Long Island and Staten Island could work, but Brooklyn, Queens, or Jersey City/Hoboken is likely to be more fun for you; the other big consideration that you didn't explain is where your school is located (this is a large metro area and we can't tell you what's a reasonable commute unless we know where you're going).

lmao I go to Hunter College haha!!! Alot of my friends commute, but some who are away from home would find places to rent(about 3000 a month in the city). Usually they share their rented apartment with someone else so they split the rent. Besides the limited dorms at Brookdale, you wont have a choice but to dig out alot of money to pay for rent. There are other alternatives like living in Queens where rent is about 1K-1.5K a month. It might get as low as 500 dollars so you'll never know.

Simplest answer: As a student, you should live where you can afford. Remember, rent is high, so is tuition, books, cost of living, etc. Scour the internet for cheap apartments on craigslist for starters and you may even be able to find a place looking for a roommate.

I'd suggest trying to look on craigslist.com. It is easy to find a roommate that could split the cost of living with you.
