You can take it with or without food. When to take it depends on when your palpitations get worse. Some people can't sleep because of the palpitations, so for them is better to take it at night. Also, some people experience dizziness or somnolence, and taking it before going to sleep works better for them. If your palpitations are worse during the day, take it in the morning.

Hi - I was prescibed Toprol XL for an irregular heart beat about 6 years ago. I have always taken it in the morning and I can't tell that taking it with or without food makes a difference. Be aware that it may make you feel kinda funny for a couple of days but it will get better. Good luck.

Generally it does not matter with this medication whether it is taken with or without food. Most blood pressure medications are taken in the morning, and since it is Toprol XL it is extended release (meaning it released over time). I would definately consult your physician about when to take it, just in case he has any specific reason for you to take it at night.

this is a prescription drug prescribed for you by a doctor correct why didnt you ask him those questions you cant expect lay people to tell you how to take this also what about the pharmacy where you filled it did you not think to ask them for directions? medication is serious and must be taken per the directions given by the prescribing md i cannot believe you took these pills without questioning .

It doesn't matter if you take it with food or not. You can try it in the morning, since you're blood pressure is likely to be higher while awake (rather than when sleeping). Watch for lightheadedness/dizziness/feeling of fatigue when you first take it. Change position (sitting to standing, lying down to sitting) slowly.
