As I'm sure you know, this quote is from the story of Chanticleer the rooster in the Canterbury Tales.
Chanticleer is a very proud rooster, but he's outwitted by a fox who flatters so much that Chanticleer loses his good judgment; "he shuts his eyes when he should see" - ignores the fact that the fox is a deadly foe. While Chanticleer drops his guard to crow, the fox grabs him and eats him up.
At least that is how I spin it...your mileage may vary.

I think this is the flip side of the old saying, "God helps him that helps himself"
So, if a man willfully does something against what he has been taught is the better judgment, he is on his own and at the mercy of the consequences of his own actions.

The truth is always obvious. The bible states that the truth will set one free. Open your eyes and you will see the true thus allowing "God" to set you free.
