My female Chihuahua pees every time you touch her and we can't get her to stop. Any one know why she might be doing this or how we could get her to stop? Thanks.

Submissive urination is normal, especially in young dogs. Most dogs will outgrow this in time, 6 mos to 2 years...

This is your dog's way of saying you are the boss. Young wolves will do this when the adults come back from hunting.

You don't say how old your dog is so I don't know if this is abnormal.

There are several ways to reduce the behavior. The most important thing to do is NOTHING. If you punish, yell, react or otherwise intimidate the dog, it will only do it more.

The best thing you can do is ignore your dog when you first get home. Wait for the dog to calm down without any greeting from you. When you do greet the dog, do not reach for it to pet it until you have gotten down to her level. (Bending over the dog is intimidating.)

When you know someone is coming to the house, make sure that you take her out to urinate shortly before. Then have the visitor ignore her until she has calmed down and then only when on her level.

But again the MOST important thing is to not do anything when she does pee because you WILL make the problem worse and delay her dropping this juvenile behavior.

That is called submissive peeing. If you are patient and don't get upset with her, it will stop eventually.

When you first come home, don't make a big deal of her. Let her out or take her out so she can go potty. When she does go, tell her how wonderful she is and praise her to the heavens. You want her to understand that you love it when she goes outdoors. But do not say anything when she gets nervous. If you get angry or yell at her, it will only make things worse. Time, patience and lots of TLC will win the day eventually.

What drrabbit said is 100% correct. Submissive urination is not something she has control over. Ignoring the dog when greeting is very important. Discipline will make it worse. Wait till she calms down. Only pet her when she is calm and quiet. Don't use high pitched excited voice. Build her confidence through training and praise. Most pups outgrow this but some might not... Cocker Spaniels are notorious for this...thus I call mine the Cocker Piddler! :)

How do you act when you pet her? Do you make a big fuss? When a dog gets to excited it will pee. It can't help it. Try to have a calm attitude because dogs sense your feelings. Sit down and stroke softly and talk quietly without making a fuss. If your dog does not pee, give it a treat and praise it but not to much.

it's excited peeing. when you walk in the door, don't pay any attention to her. clip the leash on, and take her for a walk right away. if she is a puppy, it's because her bladder muscles aren't as strong as an adult dog. make sure that she goes pee outside as much as she needs to, and don't act excited to see her when you walk inside.

i have a mini dach, and he used to do it all the time.

That's a submissive behavior, they do that for the pack leader. You are the alpha female and she is not.

In this case you may have to consult a professional dog trainer to help you. I have seen it done before, yet not often 100% sucessful. Often, they just called their dogs out of the house to greet them outside or kenneled them until the orginal "greeting" is over. I hope its just once and not everytime.

Look at the Dog Whisperer, his name is Ceasar and he is remarkable with dog physcology for lack of a better term.

Best wishes with little "Tinkle Bell".
