It might be just something I’ve noticed but, when I hear a preacher talk to his flock, especially the ones that attack evolution, the tone of their voices seem to change; when attacking evolution it’s a harsh, authoritarian voice with no doubt whatsoever, but when it’s something like the 10 commandments, it’s a soft, pleading tone like that of a loving parent disobeyed by a rebellious child. This is a pretty effective trick, does it take long to learn?

Actually, in homiletics class....yes. We were. It's more of a matter of preference and style, but - good vocal control is a necessary thing when preaching good sermons.

Intonation of your voice is supposed to captivate your audience in the way you want them to hear your words. I'm not sure that it's something you learn at preacher school, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
