Smudging is the burning of certain herbs to create a cleansing smoke bath, which is used to purify people, ceremonial and ritual space, and ceremonial tools and objects. There are different ceremonies and rituals that can be done.

It might have been adopted by "Wiccans" - but it's a practice of the American Indians of the Southwest. Mostly sage is burned. It smells really good.

Smudging is taking some herbs, usually in a bundle, and letting them slowly smoulder. The smoke is said to clear away negativity. You can smudge rooms, objects and people. Many people use sage, but lavender and other herbs can be used, as well.

it's basically directing smoke from a burning smudge stick (a bundle of herbs) over and onto something.

so to smudge a person would be to direct the smoke over their body, and to smudge a smaller object usually consists of just passing the object through the smoke.

the herbs are lit on fire and then allowed to smolder and smoke.

it's a method of purification

What they said.

White sage is most common in Wiccan practices in the United States. I understand smudging is not common in the UK.

The White Sage smoke is not good for you inhale, so be careful.

Smudging is burning certain herbs (generally sage) around mirrors, windows, and doors to drive away negative energy (including unwanted spirits / ghosts). It is common among Pagan and neo-Pagan religions.

It's like the Native American tradition of using smoke from sage and other herbs to "smudge", or cleanse yourself, or your domicile of negative energy, etc..
