That's what happened today. A child was left after an outdoor class for 25 minutes after the end of class. The child was afraid of thunderstorms and her e mm wasn't there on time.. After that, a mom left 2 children for a class during a thunderstorm after reading the handout yesterday that states, class is canceled during thunderstorm and you must immediately pick up your child. I
I just can't imagine what could possibly have gone through their minds. Yes, bad weather can hold you up, but 25 minutes after class has ended and your child is afraid of storms and has been standing out in one for the last half hour? The second parent expected a private art class since her children were the only students to show. I explained i was a metal gazebo and that I don't want to be outside in this weather and that class is automatically canceled at lightening. Why risk your children's lives a(and mine) to have class!

I did stay with the children, that's a requirement. There are no storm safe shelters to go to with the park.

Most people are stupid, but maybe the late ones did not know there was thunder. Maybe they were shopping and did not hear or see it?

NO, I would not leave a child outside during a storm ... but ...
I have 3 daughters, one night there was a big storm ... hail, hard rain, major thunder/lightning the works.
All of a sudden we had 3 small bodies in bed with us ... I asked what was going on and soon learned that when the weather got inclement, the babysitter headed for the basement.
They were afraid!
I told my girls to get their bathrobes on and we went and sat by the patio door, let each daughter reach out and picked up her own hail even.
Then Dad became the teacher, showing how to count seconds between the lightning and thunder ... time/distance from the storm, each second is 1100 feet, 5 seconds is about a mile etc. and how far away the storm or lightning actually is ... explaining the basics of weather ... why we need rain ... what lightning rods do and when to go to the basement ... what not to do during storms ... they fell asleep and I carried them up to bed, ... but they never got up during another storm. ...
a little education/knowledge can go a long way.

I used to read to preschool children at a library. The program was always 30 minutes long. You wouldn't believe how many parents would leave their children and come waltzing back an hour later. In the meantime I had to deal with children who were scared, crying, afraid they'd been abandoned, etc.

Did you consider reporting this woman to the authorities?
If it happens again......don't hesitate, a child's safety is at stake.
Was it possibly for you to bring the children inside to a safe place and let the parent know?
