Dearheart,

I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for over 20 years. If you need medication, then you need medication. Never be ashamed if your doctor feels that it will help you. As I would always advise anyone that suffers from anxiety or panic attacks, medication should always be combined with some counseling with a professional.

Anxiety can become a vicious cycle. If you have gotten "sick" around your friends, then get around friends again....you think to yourself, "Oh gosh, what if it happens again?" Then that causes MORE anxiety. You get anxious about being anxious. (Hope that I am making sense, here)

And may I please tell you something? You are NOT STUPID. Don't ever say that about yourself. You're human. Anxiety is a real problem and happens to real people. It certainly doesn't mean you are stupid. IN FACT, to just come on Q & A and admit that it's a problem for you, is brave as hell, in my opinion. You are asking for help. You ARE BRAVE.

There is a REAL condition called "social anxiety." So don't beat yourself up. The best thing you can do for yourself is have a little talk with your doctor. There is help available. Practicing some deep breathing, learning to relax and NOT being ashamed, can take you a long way in beating this thing. For good!

You have taken the first step, hon...you have asked for help. You are alot stronger than you think. Next time, before you are due to meet with a group of your friends, take a very deep breath, as big as you can, then hold it for 5 seconds. Then exhale as slowly as you possibly can. Repeat this deep breathing a couple of more times and you WILL feel more relaxed. You are providing your brain with more oxygen.

Practice this kind of deep breathing when you are by yourself and practice it often. It will become second nature to you. After you are through practicing, sit back in a comfy chair and enjoy the relaxation you feel. You will come to like this feeling. Then when you are going to be in a group situation again, you will know what to do, beforehand.

The most important thing I can tell you, is that you are NOT alone. More people suffer from this, than you could possibly imagine. And never, never feel ashamed.

You are strong. You can do this... I congratulate you on being brave enough to ask this question. You go girl!

Whatever you do, do not start taking drugs to cope with the anxiety. It might be a fix, but it is temporary and then later down the road you will have 2 problems to deal with!

Go to your doctor and tell him that you have social anxiety. I work in a bar, and sometimes I feel an attack coming on for no particular reason and it usually happens when we are really busy. I have pills that I can take when I feel it coming on, and it levels out within 15 min.

When you start feeling sick think of something else. They have probably been sick in front of someone or friends themselves.
