I take my cat to a local vet clinic. the people there were always nice and helpful. the vet i usually have has moved and now there is a new guy. my cat freaks out everytime we go to the vet. she hisses and scratches. she never scrathed my old vet but she scratched the new one. i dont like this vet because he was very short with me and didnt really answer my questions. my cat has an ear infection and he didnt tell me how i can prevent them in the future. he pretty much just gave me the meds and sent me off. but he was quick to give me sedatives for my cat. he told me to give her 2 pills before visits. i gave her the pills for the follow up visit but she was out of it for alomost a whole day. when i called animal poison control they said that based on her weight she should have had only 1 pill not 2. i was so worried that i caused my cat permanent damage. i know its my fault because i had a bad feeling about that vet but i took her there anyway. obviously i will never go there again.

Thank you to all for all of your great advice.

Orla F: I am not an ungrateful person. My previous vet was great. Yes my cat was very scared and aggresive. He prescribed chloropromazine not asp. He told me to give twice what she should of had. How does it help my cat when 6 hours after i give her the meds i find her lying on her side looking like she is about to die, with her wide open and her eyes glassed over. This is supposed to help my cat??? Are you saying I should be grateful for that???

Unfortunately, your vet sounds like he's just in it for the love of money, not for the love of pets.

You did the right thing by bringing your cat to the vet. He did solve her problem - ear infection. You had an emergency, and came to your usual place. Everyone would do the same thing.

Now that you gave this new vet a chance, and you know him better, it's time to find a new vet. One that will answer your questions. One that actually cares for your cat.

It's so nice to hear how much you care about your cat. Cats give us so much love. It's nice to know that we can care for them and reciprocate the love.

Obviously you need to find a new vet. What I find most amazing here is "feline intuition." Your cat knew right away that this vet didn't care about her. My cat is the same way. I take him to a cat clinic rather than a general vet, and they are very caring. He loves it. Three people fussing over him at the same time is just natural for him. He even takes his shots "like a cat," and they can't check his heart rate because his purring drowns out all else. At home, it's the same. If I'm tired, he just rubs my legs and waits for me to go to bed. If I'm unwell, he stays right on the foot of my bed, walking up slowly and gently to check on me from time to time. If I'm bored, he hops around, suggesting that what I most need is to play with him and his toys. And if I'm on the phone too long, he comes up making loud noises, trying to tell the person on the other end that I have better things to do with my day than talk. Only person he ever showed dislike too, instantly, was a temporary catsitter. I thought that person was OK, but later he closed his business and didn't tell his clients. So, when it comes to selecting the next vet, shop around and watch your cat's reaction. She will know what type of person the vet is.

Yup. If your cat doesn't like the new vet and you're not comfortable either, the staff doesn't make up for it. Find another vet. I actually choose to take my animal pals to a vet that is about 40 miles away when there are several within a 3-10 mile radius.

If he is a part of a vet clinic, contact the owner (my vet office is owned by one vet, but has several that work there) and let them know what's going on, and your concerns. If you can get a different vet within the office, and you're comfortable going that route, go for it. Otherwise, start finding a new vet, but don't be afraid to let that vet know why you DON'T want to go to him anymore. Also, like everyone else said, contact the vet association and let them know what's going on. I'd rather my pet(s) be comfortable with their vet than for them to hate or fear their vet. Not a good sign.

1. THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT! With humans there's medical malpractice, because some doctors are totally irresponsible. Some doctors are bad doctors. You were using the clinic with good results previously, how is this your fault?

2. Who owns this clinic? Write to them and complain to the licensing board.

3. Is kitty OK? I'm so sorry for you.

talk to some local dog/cat breeders, see who they recommend....these types of people usually welcome opportunities to help animals get treated well, and should be glad to recommend a good, caring vet. I have a good one here, got him through asking pet owners in my area, but I'm in sw pa., don't know where you are. As for the vet you were dissatisfied with for good cause, SPREAD THE WORD. Save other poor pets and their owners the heartache of going through such an experience themselves. And go with your gut instincts, God put them there for a reason, for future reference. Good luck with your search.

Go to another vet. Ask your friends and family for any recommendations of some good vets in your area.

Best wishes.

the vet prob gave the cat a sedative known as acp it is variable in its side effects so you can gve a very varied dose. your cat isnt damaged from the sedation, it was probably given the sedation because your cat was very anxous and could have injured both you and the vet in the consultation room. cat scratch disease can serioulsy injure, hospitalise or even kill people. i dont sedate any cats cause i find it unrewarding and am a serious cat lover but as a vet i know cats can be vicious in the consultation room. it may not have liked the vet but it doesnt necessarily mean the vet is a bad vet he may be a bad communicator though. why is it that if something bad happens everyone loves to moan about it but no one ever seems to mention if a vet helps their pet

Good call on not going back! I would also give the vet a call and let him know WHY you won't be back. Save someone else going through the same thing you did.

aw, sweets, it's not your fault! you didn't know the vet was a dolt. listen, just go vet hunting. go to the vets nearest you and just ask some of them for some info and if possible to meet the vet himself, if they are a good place they will allow you to and you can find out for yourself wheather or not you want to change to that vet.

hope your kitty gets well soon!
