Bloating, gas, diarrhea, can have nausea too; can last for a couple of hours.

However, there are things that can help: Breyer's produces a lactose-free vanilla bean ice cream (very good).

Lactaid pills were mentioned in another answer; however, they didn't work for me. Years ago, I purchased Lactaid drops through the Internet from a pharmacy in Canada (it is not sold in the USA any more). The only difference is that the instructions say so many drops per liter, rather than per gallon. After ordering, I got it in about a week.

You may be able to tolerate cheeses, cottage cheese, stuff like that. Trial and error.

Health food stores sell "ice-cream" like products like SoyDelicious or rice based "ice-cream" fudge bars, etc. They are excellent! Don't let the names fool you.

With time, you will learn what you can eat and find substitutes for what you crave.

I've been lactose intolerant over 30 years and have no lack of goodies to eat.

The common symptoms of lactose intolerance are gastrointestinal, primarily, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence (passing gas), and, less commonly, abdominal bloating, abdominal distention, and nausea. Unfortunately, these symptoms can be caused by other gastrointestinal conditions or diseases, so the presence of these symptoms are not very good at predicting whether a person has lactase deficiency or lactose intolerance.

Um Lactose intolerance is a self-diagnosed condition I don't think a little gas means anything and you know it could be the formula you are giving him he was used to your breast-milk and you changed his diet of course he is going to have a reaction. Formula generally makes infants more gassy and constipated. And, him not sleeping often you know breast-fed babies eat every two hours that is 12 times a day because breast-milk is easier to digest than formula is

bloating, gas, diahrreah
it's not pleasant

some people also have the kind where dairy makes you vomit, but i think the first set of symptoms is more common

you can buy over the counter pills that are basically pure lactase (the enzyme that counters lactose) and helps you digest it better
