Electrician training? Is Apprenticeship the only way?

Is it possible to study theory before taking the leap of quiting a comfortably paying job? I want to break into this field but the apprentice programs are limiting. They also don't pay quite enough to support the family. What other alternatives might I have? Is there any part-time vocational schools to study the vocation and possibly get an 'apprentice' job that pays ok? Even with a private company? Any advice?

Yes you can go to Vo-tech and even some colleges for the training, the apprenticeship is set up for getting a union job.
