First make sure that you have a job when you get here....and you have to make at least $60,000 a year to live inside the city, you'll have to earn more to live outside NYC.....if you don't mind the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island then you'll be able to make a decent living on about $40,000 a year......You're also going to need Really good credit and steady position with an establish company or about $5,000 in cash....that'll get you into any apartment in NYC.....I'm sorry I've been her all my life and I know.....You're going to need ALOT

You'd better be a pretty good writer to be able to afford in or around the city. If you go well outside the city you're looking at 700 a month for really cheap rent in a very small room. The most common thing a professional writer says in NYC...."Would you like to hear our specials?"

If your 18 and moving to the city alone, your gonna need LOTS of help. FIrst of all, you need a really good job. I think that you should try living in another area, besides Manhattan. I live in Queens and its really nice. After u get a reallly good job, then u can move into the city. The city is reallllllyy expensive, especially if u dont have a job and ur only 18. My advice is to hang out in another borough at first, make some good money, then move into the city when ur a lil older...good luck honey

The new artist community in NYC is Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was Greenwich Village for a long time, but those days are gone forever. Now it's Brooklyn, and also Long Island City, Queens.

For you I wouldnt live in the city YET. I dont know your income level but its a bit expensive. I would live downtown Brooklyn (Which is still expensive) but alot more cultural and diverse. Writers need inspiration, and I think living there will best serve your creativity. Again, its still a bit expensive but you wont regret it. (Park Slope area)
