I always hear all the crazy kook conspiracy theories about the artificial sweeteners and cancer, too much caffeine, etc. But isn't soda really just flavored water? Soda has been around for how many years and I don't really see mass death around the world because of it.

Am I the only one that thinks that soda is probably just fine for you, as long as you are not overweight?

OK, you were right....there are some CRAZY people out there on this subject.

No, caffeine will not give you cancer, especially in the quantities found in sodas, give me a break.

No, there are not 20 spoonfulls of sugar in EACH SIP??? Sugar content is clearly displayed on label, diet soda has no sugar.

There have been no findings that any of the sugar substitutes will cause you cancer, otherwise they would be banned by FDA. The weirdo extreemists can claim that ANYTHING will cause you cancer (the sun, floride in your water, microwaving in plastic, sitting to close to the TV, etc.)

So, use common sense, don't rely on soda for nutrition, but if you like it, drink up without fear of cancer or "attacks" on your liver etc.

Soda is more than just flavored water... it's flavored SUGAR water.

The concern is that sugar content in a soda and the amount of soda people consume a day.

A 12 ounce can of soda is about 3 or 4 tablespoons of sugar. 4 Tablespoons is a 1/4 cup of sugar. If someone drinks 3 or 4 sodas a day, that's 1 cup of sugar (sucrose) a day.

I just drank a 12 ounce can of Ginger Ale. The nutritional info states it contains 35 gr sugar. That's equivalent to 3 tablespoons.

Looking at a 20 ounce bottle of cola, the label states 28 gr per serving, but the bottle contains 2.5 servings which in total contains 70 grams of sugar.

In terms of calories, 70 grams of sugar is 280 calories. For an average male at 2000 calories a day, 280 calories is 14% of your daily calories. Drink 2 or 3 of those 20 ounce bottles, that's up to 40% of your daily calories from the soda.

That's a lot of calories with no nutrient content - empty calories.

Diet sodas - you trade off sugar for an artifical sweetener. The long term effects of artificial sweeteners are unknown. Are they carcinogens? Only time will tell.

We are not seeing the mass deaths directly from the soda because the effects are not instantaneous. It's not like drinking poison where the effects are seen immediately. However, there has been a rise in obesity, diabetes, coranary diease and other illness due to excessive consumption.

Soda has been around for 100 years but it's not made the same way now as it was then. Also, people drink it a whole lot more now than they did then. Modern soda contains extra caffeine, sugar, artificial sugar, corn syrup (the big problem for many people) artificial flavors, and all kinds of other ingredients that aren't a "traditional" part of soda.

Nobody is saying soda is bad for you in small quantities, just that you shouldn't drink it as your primary drink.

Yes, soda is flavored water...with LOTS of sugar and increasingly high fructose corn syrups. The latter has been proven to be very fattening. Soda is not fine for anyone overweight or otherwise. Too much soda can also cause other health problems, too, such as caffiene dependency, bone loss and tooth decay. There's more and more infants and toddlers having tooth decay because their parents allow them to drink so much pop...even putting it in their baby bottles. I've seen school kids to where that is what they consume for their daily breakfast instead of a proper meal. You can't tell me that is healthy.

A soft drink as a treat once in a while is fine, but it's not good to drink soda 90% of the time

the acidity in soda is bad for your teeth and the regular ones with sugar aren't good in large quantities. And drinking soda does contribute to osteoporosis - it actually can leach the calcium from your bones.
But it's not really just flavored water - have you ever read the ingredients list?
My motto is everything in moderation. so a soda once in a while probably isn't going to hurt, but if you drink it everyday, probably not a good thing.

Soda is ok for you but only if you have it once in a while. Every sip of soda that you take causes a 20 minute attack besides that every sip you take has 20 spoons of sugar and is very unhealthy.also it is very bad for your teeth because of the chemicals in it. If you finish the soda in one gulp then you will only one attack. Also it is a good idea to drink it with a straw so it goes past your teeth and straight into your throat. Soda isn't just flavoured water. It has chemicals that can sometimes make you sick and it can be very bad for you or anybody else.

yes the caffeine in the soda can cause cancer. too much and it can. no soda is not just flavored water. it is water with many sugars, fats, calories, and artifitial flavoring supplements. so stop or cut down on the soda. or just go with caffeine free or decaffeinated drinks.

Soda is not as healthy as it seems. They are full of sugar and in the long run if people drink alot of it they may end up with alot of cavities. the best beverage to drink is water. it is very healthy and refreshing.
