"But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit." (Mark 3:29,30).

The Bible tells us of an unforgivable sin, the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. This subject has been vastly misunderstood over the years. False teachers who claim miracles, dreams and visions will tell you that by denying them one is comitting the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Some have thought it may be a sin or series of sins so grievous that God could never forgive them for it, others claim if you don't recognize you accepted Christ by your own free will you have comitted this sin. These are but a few of the many misconceptions. However if we look at the subject in its setting and proper context we can know what it is. The leaders of the Jewish nation, the Pharisees and priests at the time of Christ's ministry accused Him of performing miracles by the power of satan:

"And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils." (Mark 3:22).

Jesus was well aware that they were thinking this and thoroughly rebuked them:

"And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand." (Mark 3:23-25).

Jesus showed these "know it alls" how there conclusion was nonsense, How could satan cast out satan? Obviously he could not and their theory was foolishness. Christ also gave a practical lesson for ages to come; that being we should be united in our home lives, under the authority of His word. Christ came to bind satan (the strong man):

"And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house." (Mark 3:26,27).

The Lord Jesus Christ is the word (John 1:1,14) that washes the sinner. Satan has been cast out of heaven:

"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." (Revelation 12:7-11).

The Bible makes it clear that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is when one accuses Jesus of being demon possessed:

"Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit." (Mark 3:30).

If someone burns a bible, denies God, commits serious sins and/or crimes God may forgive them, only those who are thoroughly convinced that the miracles of Jesus were done by satan have comitted blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Based upon John 14:26; 15:26; and 16:13-15, I've always understood the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as rejecting Christ.
These verses tell us a great deal about the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

Knowingly attribute the miracles of Jesus which were done by the Holy Ghost to the adversary. The Pharisees accussed Jesus of this, because they were too prideful to submit to the God they knew resided in Him and hence rebuked Him in order to keep hold of their position and influence among the people. This sin blasphemes the power of God in the Holy Spirit. It appears that a backslidden soul, saved initially but has fallen away, can commit this sin. And rebuking the Holy Ghost is truly something that cannot be mended, because the backslider cut off the only thing that must draw him near to be saved. Without the drawing of the Holy Ghost towards God, one cannot be saved.

The way I understand it is that if a person has his calling and election made sure and then denies the faith is the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost

Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit has nothing to do with rejecting Jesus.

You can read about it in Matthew chapter 12. Verse 31 is the key verse but you need to read the whole chapter to understand it.

Once you have read the chapter, feel free to ask any additional questions.

The Holy Spirit can be RESISTED.
Acts 7:51 Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

The Holy Spirit can be QUENCHED.
1Th 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit can be GREIVED.
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
What kind of things grieves the Holy Spirit? Read the next verse…
Vs. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

The Holy Spirit can be QUIETED.
Zech 6:8 Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.
How can one “quiet” the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He will never force Himself upon you. If you continually resist Him, or “say” that you don’t want to hear what He has to say… He will back off and be quiet where you are concerned.

The Holy Spirit can be INSULTED.
Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite (Greek: to insult) the Spirit of grace?

And finally…
The Holy Spirit can be BLASPHEMED as is shown in Mat 12:31.

vs. 31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men:

… but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

“Blasphemy” is something slanderous and/or injurious to one’s good name. And the Greek word for “against” can mean “according to the case against” or “to the charge of” which is legal language.

So what I believe this is saying is that “speaking blasphemy against” the Holy Spirit is like when someone one knowingly and deliberately as a legal witness attributes the works, operations and/or gifts of the Holy Spirit to the Devil or attributes the works, operations of the Devil to the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said that men will blaspheme His name, which they do often. He said they will blaspheme God, which they do often. He said that God will forgive this but He will never forgive blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. In the same way that people curse God/Jesus or use His name as a curse, to do the same with the Holy spirit is to blaspheme Him. To say that God/Jesus is a liar, is to blashpheme Him. Anything that puts God/Jesus down is blasphemy. To do the same with the Holy Spirit is unforgiveable. This would include denying the moving of the Holy Spirit in dispersing spiritual gifts as told in the bible. This includes miracles, healing and speaking in tongues amongst other things. We should be very wary of what we say whether Christian or non-Christian.

Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is basically denying who the Holy Spirit is, after you've already recognized Him as God.

If you don't know about the Holy Spirit, then you can't blaspheme Him, but if you've experienced Him, you have to be EXTREAMLY rebellious to deny Him.

Mark 3:23-29 seems to say that if one gives Satan credit for something that God has done then one has blasphemed the Holy Spirit.
