My niece is starting college, and we thought a shower to help her gather the things she needs would be fun.

LOL... at first I thought you were throwing a party in the actual shower/bath of the dorm, and were sending out invitations. I was wondering where that was headed.

A Dorm - house warming party? I've never heard of such a thing, but good luck if you can pull it off.

I agree with the previous poster -- a "Dorm Shower" is a big etiquette no-no. Besides, even if it were something else like a baby shower or a wedding shower, you are a member of her family so you would not be the one to do it. One should never throw a shower for a member of one's own family.

you aren't going to like this but, i don't think a "shower" is a good idea. this is her family's responsibility. people are always going to showers for babies, weddings, engagements etc. it kind of sounds like you're looking for others to supply her.
sorry, just my opinion.

If you want to help out, why don't you just give her a gift?
