Oh, I've heard them protest Disney.

When I was growing up there was a long list of things I was not allowed to watch. It goes way beyond Harry Potter.

The Chronicles of Narnia is an allogory which is a story designed to tell us the Gospel of Jesus in the form of fantasy. The Lion who dies and then comes back to life is supposed to remind us about Jesus.

In Disney, those who practice witchcraft are nearly always bad and good people, who don't practice witchcraft prevail.

In Harry Potter, there are good witches and bad witches, much like in the Wizard of Oz. But the Wizard of Oz is clearly the dream of a little girl.

Harry Potter is depicted as if it was real.

The movie "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," like the other upcoming Chronicles of Narnia movies, is actually based on the saga by C.S. Lewis, a famous Christian author. The series parallels the Bible, chronicling the creation, corruption, salvation, destruction, and ultimate rebirth of the land of Narnia.

A few years back there was a HUGE boycott/protest over Disney's stance on homosexuality, offering benefits to homosexual partners of employees.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on Disney movies; our church just had a box donated for the church lending library, and we've had to do some sifting to remove those that are altogether incompatible, or at least to note what theological problems they might have. (ex. Pocahontas and animism, Mulan and ancestor worship, Fantasia and pagan imagery, etc.) I'm not sure every reference of magic is necessarily harmful, though. Witches are usually not the heroes in these movies, and there is definitely a good vs. evil theme. These things are good conversation starters when a parent sits down and watches a movie with their children.

Hey, not all Christians are against Harry Potter! I'm a Christian and I LOVE Harry Potter.

How many Disney movies have witchcraft or other kinds of magic? Nearly all of them: Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins...

I don't know why some are okay and some aren't. I think it's entirely possible that some of my Christian brothers and sisters get caught up in the hype around certain forms of entertainment. Remember the stink some of them made about The Da Vinci Code?

Actually there is a church in my town, protestants i believe, that tell those who attend it that Disney Land is from the Devil.
A couple friends i grew up with who went to the church with their parents told me. The kids were told they could not watch cartoons like Pokemon, read Harry Potter, or anything with supernatural things. They told me they could only turn on the cartoon channel if things like Scooby Doo was on since the monsters were not real. Anything that had magic was supposedly from the Devil. Some churches are more strict then others. They cant see that it is all fake and only for entertainment.

I see no difference either- actually I am a Christian mom who loves Harry Potter- and the I have loved seeing all the movies with both of my children. Before we saw the first movie,I was a bit leery of them as well, and then my daughter got free tickets to the first movie, for perfect attendance at school, and I said we would go and then talk about the movie after- and you know what, from then on I was hooked. There are other movies that I would ban before the HP movies. Have fun seeing the newest.

Exactly. Magic has been used in literature for thousands of years; why single out just one series? What about Bewitched? Or I Dream of Jeannie?

If you are a parent or church leader, you should read the Harry Potter books before making a decision on them. The books hardly make magic accessible to youngsters.

Harry has to be accepted by invitation to enter the school to learn magic. He needs to buy all sorts of supplies, such as a wand (his has a core of phoenix feather) and fantastical potion ingredients (such as "boomslang skin"), in order to practice. The spells are difficult to master, and the books don't describe them in enough detail to really show anyone how.

i'm a Christian, and don't comprehend any Christians individually who're against Harry Potter. it particularly is in basic terms farce, would not sell something against the ten commandments, and encourages toddlers to examine. Harry Potter rocks.

You forgot to mention THE WIZARD OF OZ. What about Snow White? Cinderella, etc.

I am a Christian. I agree with you. There is no difference in Harry Potter and these other works of fiction.

Actually, the Chronicles of Narnia were written by C. S. Lewis to teach his children about Jesus. The lion Aslan represents Jesus Christ, while the white witch represents Satan. The battle for Narnia parallels the Battle of Armageddon.

And actually, I don't go for all of the Disney movies. Some of them are much too dark for me.
