Last year I let my mother-in-law use my credit card to pay for two of her kids to go to an EF Tour it ended up costing more than $3000 she said she'd pay it off w/in a year but she's been only paying me the min $100 a month and it's getting no where, I still owe $2500 on the card, how can I get rid of this debt. She blames me for not telling her that the interest would rack up, but made her aware of everything before I charged it. Now she tells me not to tell her husband since she was the one who ruined HIS credit, What do I do, I know I was stupid for trusting her but how can I fix this?

Can you say deadbeat mother-in-law? If she is paying the $100/month, just get a different card and let her pay it off. If she misses one payment and you are obligated to pay, tell her husband the whole truth. I don't like people who ask me to lie (it's a lie by omission). She is old enough to know that money is not free and whenever you borrow you pay interest. I hope the $100 is enought to cover the minimum payment. Tell her that she is using your credit up and you don't appreciate the fact that since she has run your debt up you don't want to charge on that card and are uncomfortable running up any debts for yourself. When she starts in, tell her what she did was not fair to you and she took advantage of you. Say everything nicely, keep very calm, but state everything firm. When she starts in just keep saying that she is familiar with debt and interest. So she realized when she charged those tours she did not have a way to pay them off quickly and that was NOT the deal. People will use you, and people that can't handle money are dangerous when you allow them to use your credit or lend them money. They are not responsible and will try to weedle out of the debt. Stand your ground sweetly and firmly. Can her husband help pay it off? I would do what I needed to do to get rid of the debt. If she doesn't step up, oh well, do what you have to do. Just remember she's related to you and you want to keep peace in the family. You could really make an enemy here.

The sad thing about this is that it's on your credit card and will effect your credit if you don't pay it . I would tell your father in law and husband what happened. They may be able to pay the amount in full. If you have to contribute $ to her $100 to pay off the card I would do so.
I would also get her to sign a promissary note to pay you back any amount that you paid towards the $3000 bill. That way you have something to take to small claims court if you need to sue her.

She did the wrong. She is not that naive to think that interest would not build up and that 100 a month would take care of it. She already said she ruined her husbands credit, so she knew. Go to him, if you get no satisfaction from her. Unhappy, yes, but she created it now suffer.

I would confront your husband and father in law and tell them exactly what happened.

It will not be pleasant, but she brought this on herself.

If you have to take her to court. Do not let this person ruin your credit like she did her husbands.
