I am not a "religious freak," but I do remember verses and chapters much like I remember lyrics to a song or the author of a book. It's just part of the memorizing.
I don't know them all, I know the ones I repeat or ones that are my favorites.
There are some I have to look up...and usually after I look up something, I remember it if it is important enough.
Some scripture is set to music including the book, chapter, and verse...As in the song for I John 4:7-8
7Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love (New International Version) from www.biblegateway.com
I also can quote Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams, Audre Lourde, Sylvia Plath, and the list goes on...I can pretty much go to page and paragraph given the literature. So it isn't just the Bible.
I also have a habit of being able to quote the science textbook I teach from in public school, and YES, I teach evolution (because it is part of the state benchmark for certain science classes), because I don't think it goes against any Christian doctrine (I believe they are co-existing...God created the world, and it has definitely evolved...)...I don't teach any creationism at school, nor do I believe I should...it's not the place for it. The FACT that creatures do evolve/change over time is a fact and inevitable, and another beautiful example of God at work (which I don't say at school either).

Indeed it is a hugely annoying habit. lol. Why can they not think of something in their own words instead of quoting all the time? You should look at your question a little more carefully. Maybe you (I presume you're an atheist) would attract less flack from Christians if you would just respect them a little more.
And to Christians:
Please spare this asker your rage. He simply misunderstands you, as I'm sure you misunderstand him. Try to do what you truly believe is right. Would giving this guy a hard time make life any better for anyone?
I have no problem with the quotes, provided they cause no harm. I'm sure the asker is trying to point out that the constant barrage of bible quotes does cause harm, in that a lot of arguments start from this alone. Try to be compassionate and understand that not everyone shares your religion, and not everyone who does not share it is in need of conversion.
I hope I have averted a lot of trouble here.

I have studied the Bible pretty much all my life and know many verses by heart. I will still often look them up to be certain because I memorized passages in several different translations, and sometimes it's difficult not to jumble them.
Because I know a lot of Scripture, when a passage comes to mind, I can find it easily by using a concordance. With a concordance, I look up a key word from the passage, and the concordance lists all the references that contain that key word and a phrase that shows me how that word is used in the passage. I can quickly find specific Scripture verses that way.
I'm not really such a "freak" by the way. I think we would probably get along just fine.
Blessings.

Some i know well enough to qoute, others i will know the words but not the exact reference of it and some i need to look up in my Bible. Depends on the individual verse really..Some are so famous that almost everyone could quote it..
God bless!

Thank You for the compliment!!! Actually, I do not have to remember them all; I have a book called a concordance presently by the computer, along with a couple Bibles. I read the question; recall the generalidea of the verses I want to use for the question, verify its location via teh concordance, verify it in a bible, then answer the question. Verses that get used alot, are also highlighted in the dominantly used Bible.

Religious freak, no. Jesus freak, definitely. When you become a Christian you must become a student of God's Word. Satan can't endure much of Scripture and he is who we are waging war against along with his many non-believing co-horts. So it is wise to fill your heart and mind with the sword of the Spirit, which is God's Word. There is a great deal of Scripture I have hidden in my heart that I have to look up to find the actual verse, but it does not take very long because the Holy Spirit guides us into all Truth.

The same way so many people know every line in MP's Search for the Holy Grail or major league baseball stats.
I'll be honest - half the time I'm looking stuff up. I can remember what was said and identify who wrote it, but where can often allude me.

It depends. I generally don't remember the chapter and verse numbers...I read, then when the time comes I'll remember what was said and can quote. Being Charismatic I would attribute this to a prompting by the Holy Spirit.
Oh, and thanks for the "freaks" comment :)

Freaks? They're not freaks, they're people who are very passionate about something. And so what if they are - does it hurt you, give you cause to mock them? They're not hurting anyone directly by believing.
I would say yes, if they love their religion that much they do know the quotes. How does anyone remember anything else? By having interest in it - I remember mathematical formulae and methods because it interests me and I spend time doing it.
