I suffer from panic and social anxiety. I havent started taking the effexor yet but have spoken with my doctor and its one I'm contimplating. I used paxil in the past and found effective but still dealt with some overwhelming anxiety provoking situations. If I go on Effexor and feel I need something extra...is it fine to take in conjunction with benzo's? Does it totally alleviate anxiety? I just want your personal experiences..even taking similar drugs..

I've taken Xanax with several of the antidepressants I've tried. Currently on Lexapro...did fine. You getting them from your doc right?

I'm not a medical doctor, so my opinion is worth exactly what you're paying for it. People do take benzodiazepenes and antidepressants like Effexor. Antidepressants such as Paxil and Effexor are often prescribed, however, as a way of avoiding benzodiazepenes. Benzos are addictive; I've heard of them described as being like "alcohol in pill form." You would be wise to avoid benzos unless they are absolutely necessary. Someone with anxiety is at a high risk for alcohol or benzo abuse, as both of these are very good at getting rid of anxiety in the short term. In the long term, you may find it very hard to live without them, however. Talk to your doctor. He'll probably say it's safe. He might be hesitant about the benzos, however, and for good reason.

I take both Effexor & Xanax and have had no problems what so ever. Always remember, everyone is different, just be aware of how and what you are feeling. Sometimes you forget changes in meds and don't associate it with symptoms you are experiencing, such as sleepiness, dizziness, tremors, forgetfulness, nervousness, lethargy etc

You should not mix ANYTHING with Effexor unless your physician directs you to.

Benzodiazepenes (such as Klonopin, Xanax, and Dalmane) are often used effectively with antidepressants to treat anxiety and panic disorders, but you must be monitored by a physician. These drugs are addictive and may be contraindicated if you take other types of medication (i.e., oral birth control).

Obviously, you and your doctor are collaborating on this. Please ask him/her if benzodiazepenes and SSRI's are the right combination for your anxiety and panic attacks.

Effexor is good, but when you first go on it, try not to start a high dose. I would fall asleep in the movies or just random places and totally forget things that happened. Plus, you HAVE to take it every day- the withdrawl effects are horrible! I mean, vertigo, shakes, etc. Overall, I found that it was the best one- Paxil asnd Zoloft did NOTHING for me.

I know someone who currently takes Effexor with Xanax, so the answer is, yes you can.

I'm pretty sure it's alright because I've been prescribed ativan and xanax in the past to use until my SSRI kicks in.

If you want to feel whacked out of your mind you are an addict . Have you been treated for this? This would be a better idea than mixing dangerous medication cocktails. Just a thought.
