Artisticly, I'd go for the first one. It's a better shape, more edgy, and a good spin on butterflies which, in the tattoo world, are done WAY too much. If you want, you can ask the your tattoo artist to make it more feminine and colorful by adding some pink/purple/green shading on the wings or even flowers or vines. This is the best pick and it has a lot of room for color and new twists.

To really get to the other side of things, you need to be able to drop the baggage of your past. Get a tattoo that you would have gotten if you were free of the pain of what happened to you. Then you will have won. Find the images that are not tainted by your bad experiences. Get the tattoo of images that are in honor of the person that was not abused. Get the image in spite of what happened to you! Then you will win! Then you will overcome the abuse. Don't let the evil that happened to you dictate your life. Don't let it dominate your choices of who you are! In defiance of what happened and your reaction to it, get an image that is free. Get an image that was from your innocence, untainted, your hopes and dreams, your happinesses, your goals, your optimism. This will always make you smile, will always remind you of who you are, will always tell you that you have risen above, and that nothing can touch the power of who you are. Write down all of your hopes and dreams, and happinesses, and optimism, that is before the abuse, there is your tattoo, there is your happiness, there is your essence untouched and secure and free. good luck~

If it isn't absolutely clear to you what you like, it's best not to put it on your body. Don't get something you don't love, or something that doesn't have meaning to you. Simply settling on a tattoo is something you will seriously regret later down the road.

How about this. Print off both of those pics and take them to the tattoo parlor you plan on going to. Talk to one of the artists and explain what you like and dislike about each. Then ask the artist to design one for you. That way you won't be copying someone else's design and you'll get something you like. (If the artist shows you their design for you and you don't like it, just tell them and they'll work on it -- it's their job.)

I really like that second one, it has a sense of sophistication that I believe you could definitely love for the rest of your life. They're both beautiful, you can't go wrong, but I think the simpleness of the second is especially attractive.

i'm assuming it's going to be a lower back tattoo..? they're both alright but typical.. i'd go with a completely different location and tattoo..

If you are bound and determined to get a tattoo get a Gypsies moth instead of a butterfly. Congratulations on choosing a pretty tattoo IF you have to have one.

The second one with the color is beautiful & a lot more unique & distinctive than the back & grey one. It will look better over time too after it's faded.

I like the first one better, but i've seen thousands like them. Go to an artist and have them draw you something original.
