You have a problem, having the dealer cut a key using the VIN number is no problem, just show them ID and proof of ownership. The problem you're going to have is the anti theft chips in the keys, they won't start your car until they have been programmed into the PATS system. To fix that you will either have to tow the car to your Ford dealer or sweet talk them into bringing their IDS computer out to your car and programming the new key into the system. Do yourself a favor and buy 2 keys so you don't end up doing this again.

The Ford Taurus has a transponder chip on the key, so even if the dealer could cut you one, it would only open the doors and allow the ignition to be turned on, it would not start the vehicle until it was programmed to recognize the key. But check with a good lock smith, you may find one that could make and program your key for less than the dealer cost and the necessary tow.

no! you do not have to have it towed, get the Vin # off the dash and take it to the dealership with proof it is yours and they can make you a key, the Vin # if you dont have somthing laying over it is on the dash in the very front left of the driver. you can see it through the windsheild in the lower righthand side of the windsheild if your looking at the front of the car. make sure you have proof its your or they wont make you a key for it. or you can look on the title of your vehicle and i know in Idaho the Vin (Vehicle Identifacation Number) is on the top left of the title, along with that and a drivers license you should be able to get a key made

No, just call the dealer. You may need the VIN number (the number visible when you look (from the outside of the car) at the windshield, usually near the driver side). They will know you own the car.

AAA will make you a new key (if you are a member). Call a lock smith and they will come to you to re-key your car. If the key has a chip in it, be prepared to spend $300.

If you have the VIN and proof of ownership they should be able to get you a new key without taking the car over there
