Gingivitis can create serious health problems. Gingivitis almost always leads to bad breath, a serious social problem for many people. Brushing the teeth to remove plaque and tartar helps, as does treating canker sores that may appear on the gums and taking other steps to maintain good oral hygiene. Unless gingivitis is kept under control by tooth brushing and flossing and where necessary, the use of antibacterial products, the condition will recur.

Gingivitis ("inflammation of the gums") (gingiva) around the teeth is a general term for gingival diseases affecting the gingiva (gums). As generally used, the term gingivitis refers to gingival inflammation induced by bacterial biofilms (also called plaque) adherent to tooth surfaces.

Diagnosis:
It is recommended that a dental hygienist or dentist be seen after the signs of gingivitis appear. A dental hygienist or dentist will check for the symptoms of gingivitis, and may also examine the amount of plaque in the oral cavity. A dental hygienist or dentist should also test for periodontitis using X-rays or gingival probing as well as other methods.

Treatment:
A dentist or dental hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums; following this, persistent oral hygiene is necessary. The removal of plaque is usually not painful, and the inflammation of the gums should be gone between one and two weeks. A gargling of Brine Water also helps. Oral hygiene including proper brushing and flossing is required to prevent the recurrence of gingivitis. Anti-bacterial rinses or mouthwash, in particular Chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2% solution, may reduce the swelling and local mouth gels which are usually antiseptic and anaesthetic can also help.

Gingivitis treatment is very effective if the disease is caught in time. The most effective gingivitis treatment or gum disease treatment is to prevent gingivitis and gum disease from getting started. Gingivitis treatment begins with regular daily brushing of the teeth to remove plague and tartar. Scraping of the tongue is also important to remove bacteria. Many people overlook these important parts of oral hygiene, but they are essential for gingivitis treatment.

This is a bacterial infection, but is not contagious. Flossing regularly, brushing after every meal, use Listerine every time you brush and you will see results in about 2 weeks. It takes time for it to go away.

It is not entirely believed yet, but there IS evidence that it IS contagious.

The best way to get rid of it is to make a visit to your dentist, and be sure to brush, use mouthwash, and floss as directed.

not gingivitis itself, but the germs are definitely contageous! floss, brush, and do mouth wash everyday for a week, and see if that helps....if not, go see your doctor or dentist!
