yep - i once brought a giraffe home from holiday and my bag got checked - the customs guy did not get a shock when this huge neck popped out of the case - i suppose they are used to it.

Contact the train station that you will be leaving from. Find out what their policy is on transporting live animals. Can they ride in the passenger section (I doubt it) or do they need to go below as baggage?
If you don't disclose that you are taking rats and they open your luggage, you will probably not be allowed to board. You may even be subject to arrest.

They will not ASK to open your bag...they will simply open it. Any preconcieved notion otherwise may end with linoleum, your face, and TSA agents with batons and guns.
Please make sure to check with the airline at least a week before your flight to aquire the proper permits and paperwork, and procedure for transport.

i think you should transport your rats separately they might die on the flight because it gets really cold in the luggage bit of the aeroplane.
