I had the X and yes she slept in the wheel, ate in the wheel, and ran in it with all her food and bedding!!! What a freakin' site! but while cleaning it we accidentally broke the pieces that hold the slide to the top, so she now has a Dazzler cage by crittertrail abd boy does she love that huge wheel and all it's compartments. and yes she sleeps in it, eats in it, and stores bedding in it, I think they feel safe in the wheel since it's enclosed and smaller than the cage, although the dazzler has a huge wheel.!!!!! I have the crittertrail Z and she dosn't even know that ball on top is a wheel, she used to sleep in it, now she just stores her food there. LOL!!!!

Two of our mice have lived in a Critter Trail X for almost a year and a half. They spend a *lot* of time in the wheel, take naps, carry food & bedding into it besides using it for exercise. We installed a small Silent Spinner in the cage as well & sometimes both wheels are in use @ the same time.
If your hamster's wheel doesn't move because it seems stuck, you might want to take it apart & lubricate the shaft with a drop of vegetable oil (don't use anything toxic of course). We use a bit of spray-on cooking oil every time the wheel is cleaned & it works very well.

When I got my Teddy bear hamster, I got her a nice big wheel because she was growing out of her old one. She was about 5 months old at the time. She ran on that wheel for 7 hours straight 3-4 days in a row. and she would always fall asleep in it! She stopped sleeping in her wheel after about a month. I think it was just the excitment of a new toy :) you dont have anything to worry about as far as i'm concerned. But if you are worried about your hammy I would ask your vet.

Yes, my kids had one and the hamster lived in the wheel - takes in its bedding, food etc and then tried to run around in it as well. Couldn't really stop it. Now have a sensible, normal type of cage and it's not a problem.

Hi ! First off, I do not think you should switch cages every week as that would most likely stress your little hamster out.. what you could do it attach a tube! If you don't want to do that, I would use the universe but you should get the expansion kit so he has more room! Good luck and have fun with your little hamster :)

Had one that did, I couldn't get him to move out. He eventually got a new cage and a new wheel. I wasn't a huge fan of the crittertrail.

I used to have the same cage with my gerbils and they slept in the wheel because they like to sleep in small places, because it keeps them cooler in the summertime, and warmer in the winter. (kind of odd i know.)
