They use engines supplied by their parent company GM. One of the attractions for GM buying into Fiat Group years ago was Fiat diesel engine technology. I believe the diesel engine now used by Saab is an Alfa Romeo / Fiat Group unit. Interesting that Saab have also adopted the term Sportwagon for their estates, something that was Alfa Romeo

The older 2.2 diesel was a General Motors Europe design.
The current 1.9 diesels are based on a Fiat design, and developed by GM-Fiat Powertrain during the GM-Fiat co-operation in recent years.
The 3.0 v6 diesel in the 9-5 is an Isuzu design, and is also used by a number of other manufacturers (GM Europe, Renault, Lancia)

No SAAB dont design and build there own engines they use a mixture of General motor engines (Vauxhall to us in the UK) and Alfa Romeo Diesel engines.
