I have worked at my job for 4 years. There is a lady retiring here and there is a party on Thursday evening after work. We are not friends. Just co-workers. The other part is that the location of the party is 45 minutes from my house. Would it be okay to just give her a card and a small gift? What is the ediquette for attending a party like this?

Just don't attend.

Always attend these functions. Even if you're inconvenienced.

This is a time to shake hands and smile and wish the coworker well in her new life of "leisure."

This is a time to see and be seen by the rest of the company -
a time to be noted as a team player - one who participates. Otherwise you'll be pegged as too much of a loner - a misanthrope - not a team player. Easy pickings when layoff time comes around.

STAY SOBER - even if it's an open bar.

Don't be the first to leave either - even if you're bored. Wait until about 1/3 of the people are gone - then make your goodbyes and go home.

But go. This is one of those "unwritten tests" you need to be aware of.

Go. Bring a small gift and a card. And stay there for a couple hours, anyway. Then you can leave, stating need to get thru that long drive to do something or other.

I can't help ya crazy.... Normally at retirement parties I just hang @ the bar, buy rounds & get inebriated. However Barbara B has the best answer for ya.

if you don't want to go, don't. but why are you giving a gift if you're not friends. if you don't go to the party, then just shake her hand and wish her the best. if you are going, then give her a card that says good luck and buy her a drink
