Different day different show. They probably could compete. I think there was less competition in the old days. Today there are maybe 20 drivers that can win on any given weekend. In 1967 petty won 27 races of 48. Tells me that there was less competition at least in that year.

Old drivers. I think drivers like Richard Petty and Dale SR showed us they could win races in cars that didnt have the comfort and safety equipment that we have today. That may not sound like much but i think it shows dedication and a love for the sport. The difference of setup and power between old cars made them winners. They learned how to drive extremely well even if they didnt have the fastest car. Put them in a COT race and i think you would be very surprised. Instead of driving against a faster car they would be driving against who is a better driver. Since they have already shown themselves to be 2 of the best drivers in the old era I cant see them at the height of their careers losing in this era. The same cant be said for the drivers of this era.

Your first question. The old drivers could out drive these new guys plain and simple. The cars were a handful to drive when Richard Petty and all the greats were racing. These new cars are so easy to drive. They have good easy brakes power steering the helments have air conditioning, better seats, better shifting. Everything on these new cars is 100 times better than the old cars.
Your Second question. No Richard Petty and Dale Sr. could not have won 7 chamionships.................................................................................They would have won maybe 27 championships and Petty could have one more than 400 races. Because the cars are so much easier to drive.

Aside from mentioned drivers the old era drivers were in my openion the better drivers.
The cars were real cars from the factories, not rolled sheet metal. The drivers participated in building the cars and transporting their cars. These drivers did not fly race to race but were in the trasporter or fanily car or truck.
Not driving to a race Saturday or Sunday but to a race on Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday nights. These drivers were the IRONMEN of racing and could drive the wheels off a car.

cannot compare the two the reason no one will ever pass petty in wins is because he raced more then once a week alot of times and all the good drivers didnt race every race i dont think any driver will ever beat dale earnhart in wins again i think gordon will end up 2nd all time on wins list but no one else will ever come close too many good drivers now a days they train for it their whole life and stay fit and trim(except for a certain #20)and anyone truely can win a race nowadays under the right circumstance (fuel miles and cautions)

I don't think you can compare era's FAIRLY. Most decisions will be biased and it's really not a question that can be resolved. I think the competition is getting tougher by the day, but then again I wasn't alive in the 70's so I can't say that the guys today are better now or that the guys if in their prime from back then couldn't win today. It's a question that will never fully be answered because it's impossible to prove or disprove.

you can't because their all great drivers. But richard petty really won all those races because their was so many races. Then today it's harder to win a race because of the diffrence's between the old era so it would have to be new drivers.

I'd like to see the new drivers in the old cars, and how they would handle them. It's like driving an old classic compared to the luxury of today. Huge difference.
