You might be young, but you are wise to be thinking this over so carefully. It probably depends on the schools in your area which is best. Just remember that you are your son's first teacher, and a lot will depend on you. Whatever you choose, take an active role in his education. Always ask detailed questions about what he did in school. Never ask "What did you do in school today?" Instead ask "what did you read in school today?" or what are you working on in math now?" Volunteer some time in the classroom, especially during his younger years (kindergarten and first grade). Go on the field trips and volunteer to help with the fund raisers. Attend the parent/teacher conferences and take him with you. These things are important because they will show your son that you value his education and him. If you value your child and his education, he will too. And if you do this, he will get the most he can out of his schooling no matter which school you choose.

My ONLY concern w/private schools is the class sizes. and of course, that's not the same on all private schools. my nieces go to a private school and the older they get-the smaller the classes get. they are in 9th and 10th grades and there are only 2 other girls in the 9th grade w/my niece and they got mad at her for some reason-so there was really no one left for her to be friends with.
BUT... your going to have those kinds of problems anywhere! It will just be something different with different friends at the public school. If we could afford it we would most certainly be sending our 2 children to private school. They are expensive (all different-I would call all the ones in your area) but if you can do it then I say GO FOR IT! Public schools dont really give them a look at the real world any more than private schools do. (my opinion) Plus you can put him in sports, gymnastics, karate or whatever he is interested in to let him meet a wide range of different kids.
best of luck

If you can swing it you could always work part-time and home school. If not, see if there are any public Montessori schools in your area. My daughter went to a Montessori school all the way through 6th grade. It was a public school but part of the magnet program. It was outstanding. She is 16 now and has really benefitted from her Montessori years.

bkm2k has it right. Search on the 'Net for Montessori schools in your area. Although there exists no central body to regulate the adherence to the Montessori learning method, explore them and judge cost for value. If you can find a public one, as mentioned by b2m2k, you are in luck! The Montessori method is absolutely incredible for childrens' learning and development. I am a product of Montessori learning and I intend to have the same for my children. Use website below as a guide for what a Montessori school should be if you don't live in one of the areas listed on the website.
