It all depends on how you treat him and train him. Case in point-I love German Shepards. They can be aggressive as well. I have been around many that have been well trained and loved. I was also attacked-completely unprovoked when I was 8yrs old. Those dogs I know for a fact well not well cared for. It is possible to overcome nature by nurturing.

TYPICAL Pit Bulls are NOT ferocious animals. It's the irresponsible owners that give bully types a bad name. And there is waaaay more involved w/ being a responsible pit owner than say having a golden...

The fact that you aren't familiar with your own breed is a little concerning - get to the library and read up on them ASAP. Pay special attention to the history and origin. It's no secret that they were bred (and unfortunately some still are) for blood sports. And they were bred for it well. That means today's pits still have a high drive, low pain tolerance, lean muscular bodies. Highly athletic animals. They are a breed that won't give up - They'll play tug with a tree until they win. And don't forget the pits dirty little secret - they have dog-aggression tendencies. This is not something that should be taken lightly - especially with the general attitude about pits you dog may nto start a fight but he will finish it. And guess who gets blamed? There are places in the the country where pits cannot be owned. In others all pits must be leashed and muzzled anytime it is out in public. Wait until your insurance company finds out you have a pit - if they don't drop you immediately - you may not be able to afford buying dog food anymore. No, it's not fair, and it won't be. Not at least until the number of responsible pit owners out number the irresponsible ones.

If you're willing to really become a responsible pit owner - that is knowing your breed, and ensuring that you dog is a good breed ambassador. There's really no other dog like them in the world. Sweet, loving, life of the party attitude. Always up for a good romp - even in their later years they have a lot of pup left in them. I've never seen a dog as good w/ kids as a well trained pit. The Staffordshire Terrier (closely related) even has the nickname of "nanny dog". After all Petey from the little rascals was an American Pit Bull Terrier. Pits are very in-tune with their masters - very willing to please they'd do anything to make you happy. And the happiest place in the world for them? On your lap :P (they missed the memo about being 40-60lbs too heavy to be a lap dog).

I suggest you find a good trainer in you area - some one who's worked with pits before. they'll be able to teach you how to raise your pup into a well adjusted adult.

The "typical" pit bull is not nearly as ferocious as most people think (or would have you believe). If you want your pup to be playful, fun, and non-aggressive then you will need to socialize it well as a puppy. Introduce her to all different kinds of people (all different ages, races, both physically and mentally handicapped people, both sexes, people wearing uniforms, people wearing hats, etc) and reward calm, positive behavior from her.

TAKE YOUR DOG TO OBEDIENCE CLASS! You would not believe how much easier a well trained dog is to live with. Teaching your dog basic (and ideally advanced as well) obedience will teach you how to be a leader in your dog's eyes and will establish that you are in charge. A group obedience class is also an excellent opportunity to socialize your puppy and to teach her to pay attention to you around distractions. Dogs that live with a clear leader are less likely to develop behavior problems (especially aggression) than dogs who's owners don't bother to teach them basic obedience.

I have an 8 yr old pit and have had her since she was 5 weeks old, pits are auotmatically mean it is all in how you raise them. We play with her just like any other dog, she has never been mean, never growled at anything or anyone, she doesn't even bark when someone pulls into our driveway. She is a total lover not a fighter. Give your puppy lots of love and affection and you'll be fine.

Just LOVE the dog, and treat it as you would ANY other breed. They are "TAUGHT" bad behavior. Treat the dog well, and he/she will be fine! Just keep in mind, as with any dog, when your puppy gets older ~ take precautions when around strangers. Always keep a leash on. Train to walk on a leash early on.

socialization and lots of it.....with people and dogs but to remember when allowing your dog to play with other dogs that it is under strict supervision and that you are giving consiquences to unwanted behavior. any domination, obsessivness or aggression should be blocked. Also inquire about some good trainers ones who espicially work with aggresive breed dogs. This will be a good source of info for u and a chance to pick their brains and to learn some good leadership skills.

Pitbulls are usually trained to be mean and aggressive. Just train your dog like normal, and show it lots of love, and I'm sure he will be fine. I have 2 pits and they are so sweet and playful and love to cuddle, you would never think they were pitbulls.

Then play w/ it, love it, train it, have fun w/ it. The dog won't be aggresive unless you train it to be. A dog is a reflection of it's owner.

Best of LUCK!

Raise it like any other dog. The person makes the dog vicious. So just treat it right.
