I hooked the coaxial cable into my LCD tv. Its split from the cable box in my basement and I'm on the 2nd floor. How do I get my tv to show basic cable like MTV, Nick, ESPN, etc? So far it only shows the minimum: CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, UPN.

Sounds like you're just picking up local channels thru the tv antenna and nothing from your cable provider. To get cable channels you need another cable box for that tv. Where is the splitter? After the output of the cable box or before?
If it's after then whatever channel you are watching in the basement will be showing on the 2nd floor and you won't be able to change channels from the 2nd floor. If the splitter is before the cable box then you won't get any channels.
