Yes GSM phones work in Bangkok. But unless you have a local service or have applied with your operator to roam your phone will not work there.

The ideal way to go about it is to purchase a pre-paid sim card in Bangkok. You can do this at any 7/11 or phone shop. Just insert the sim card into your phone and you are done.

You can then call back to india or anyone in thailand (much cheaper than using your india servise on roaming) when you want to call back to india all you have to do is dial 009 followed by country code, city code and phone number. (note you can use + followed by country code too but it cost more)

Have fun

All brands of mobile phones, provided they are dual or triple band, work in Thailand. Just buy a SIM card in Thailand. They have rather cheap rates for calls around the world. Alternatively, you can buy a phone card that allows you to use a phonebooth for international calls. These are even more cheaper. Internet cafes in Bangkok offer the long distance call facility using Skype or other similar services for a fraction of what a mobile call will cost you.

Buy a Sim card in Bangkok. They are inexpensive and its a great way to have a safety net on the road. Incoming calls are free and if you just email the number to your friends they can contact you in and emergency and you can reach them as well. Make sure your phone is unlocked so different Sim cards will work. I carry a dozen Sim cards in my wallet from most of the countries of south east Asia and other countries around the world and have found that this works best for me.

As long as the phone support GSM 900/1800 then it will work here in Thailand.

Don't forget that Japan is NOT GSM area. Only certain 3G phones work in Japan. It is not about SIM. You can purchase SIM at airport.
