Soon I will be getting another pug as a playmate for my 5 year old female (a boy the same age). She is usually alone 5 days a week for 7-8 hours during the day and is uncrated. She does just fine because she is trained and gets plenty of exercise when I get home. How should I treat the new dog if it's not used to this? Is it wrong to crate one dog while the other is loose? I'm not sure how to handle this situation. Thanks!!

It's fine to crate the new pug and not crate your present pug. He needs time to adapt to his new situation and this is best done when you are home. While you are away, the crate will keep everybody out of trouble. My pug LOVES company! She loves to play and really enjoys the company of our two cats and older dog. I think your pug will love you for this. The new guy should adapt fairly quickly, but the crate will just smooth things out a little quicker. Pugzlii says she's jealous, she'd like a boy pug for company, too!

No it's not wrong to crate the new pug while the other is loose, that just teaches him that he has to learn and be trained before the gets to be like the other pug.

crating the one is fine. I would however really watch your original and maybe confine her slightly as seh may start to mark her territory.
If the new one is 5 years old he should hopefully be pretty much house trained and shouldn't take long to get housetrained to your house.
Good Luck

dont have one dog in the crate and one loose because the one in the crate will start barking. and also dont give the new dog too much attention because your old dog might get jelous. also if your worried about them together. just give them time alone and gradually they will be best friends =]

Crate the new dog til you are sure he is housetrained and can be trusted in the house. They don't care if one is in the crate and one is out, if they are crate trained and used to it.

If the other can't be "good" then crate him.
You would want to do this no matter what bringing a new pet into thehouse without supervision. You don't want anyone hurt.

well then why on earth get a 2nd puppy.....to prevent you feeling quilty for leaving your other dog crated all day long???, crating is so over rated and so under explained, crating is fine for when they are sleeping all night, but having a dog locked up all day, out for an hour or two and then in again all night is a disgrace, why get a 2nd dog at all????
Treat your 1st one properly before you get a 2nd TOY!!!
THIS MAKES ME SO IRRATE.

Start off the same way you took care of him. After 3 months slowly let him out with the older pug.
Good luck
