ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!! I can think of a few better than him.....Richard Petty, Cale Yarbourough, Dale Sr. A.J. Foyt and they all did it without all the safety regulations they have now. Now that takes a real driver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have to say the best pure Nascar driver of all time is The King Richard Petty.

The best all around driver can be none other than Tony Stewart. I remember When he raced the Indy 500 with a top 10 finish. Hopped in a Lear jet, had an I.V. in each arm rehydrating him. Landed in Charolette and raced 600 miles with a top 3 finish, starting from dead last since he missed the drivers meeting. 1100 miles in the same day. How many other people on this planet could race both series in the same day with top 10 finishes in both races.

2002, 2005 NASCAR Cup Champion
Top 10 in points 7 years in a row
1999 Rookie of the year
1997 IRL Champion
May 27, 2001 Raced 1100 miles, finishing 6th in the Indy 500 and 3rd in the Coke 600

I am not taking anything away from Gordon, he is a great driver on a dream team, but there are better out there.

I am a Jeff Gordon fan, so I may be a little biase on the subject, but I can give you facts...

People hate Jeff because he has now more wins than Earnhardt Sr....This is because Sr is gone. If he was still here, I really and honestly thing that it would be different.

Now that Jr has went to Hendrick, the whole team will be strengthened. That is more money and more marketing for them. That is good for ALL drivers on that team.

Jeff made his place in NASCAR history because he RACES! No one on this entire internet can say that Jeff can't drive. He started in karts and moved on up. He had a ball in Prelude to the Dream this year!

Is he the best driver of all time? I don't know...the cars are different, the trackes are different. Is he the best driver of HIS time? He comes close if he isn't.....

Each era might have to be considered but, it can't. The other drivers that you are competing against have the same equipment. Petty had 200 wins but, he had years where he had 50 or 60 races to run. Does that make Dale Sr less of a driver? I don't think so. I don't think any driver has competed in every type of car made. Driving a car a couple races isn't competing. You need a couple years to know if you are good at that level

No, that would be Mario Andretti, with Jim Clark, A.J. Foyt, Stirling Moss, and Dan Gurney in close competition. All were successful in a wide variety of racing series. Andretti in particular could win on any surface in any four-wheeled vehicle. He remains the only driver ever to win the Daytona 500, the Indy 500, and the F1 championship.

Among current drivers Tony Stewart has a far more varied resume than Gordon. Too bad he chooses to be such a jerk.

Sorry, but Jeff isn't the best driver ever. You just can't beat The King. Ken Schrader is a better driver on dirt than Jeff Gordon.

i think Jeff Gordon is the best driver of his era (90s). He was the man in the 90s, winning more races, more top 5s, top 10s, etc. He has won on every type of track, so he is one of the greatest all around NASCAR driver.

If you want to look at greatest all around driver, you have to look at drivers who have won and excelled at many different types of disciplines. Tony Stewart has championships in IRL, IROC, 2 NASCAR titles, 4 USAC titles (including the triple crown in one year), and three karting championships. He has won in 21 of 22 of the different series he's raced, the exception being grand-am.

AJ Foyt is another all around great, as well as Mario Andretti and JPM.

Jeff is a great and talented driver, one of the greatest, but I don't think he's the all around greatest ever ever ever.

JEFF GORDON HAS NEVER COMPETED IN AN F1 EVENT. HE DID A TEST DRIVE AT INDY WITH JPM IN JULY 2003. HE DIDN'T WIN ANYTHING BECAUSE IT WASN'T A RACE!!!

Outside of Cup racing, Gordon hasn't done squat. Only 5 Busch wins, no truck wins, no IROC at all, no open wheel races ever outside of sprint cars on dirt in the early years. As much as I have grown to dislike Tony Stewart, he is no doubt hands down, the best all around race car driver I know of. Nobody outside of Mario Andretti or A.J. Foyt even touches his list of accomplishments. Jeff Gordon's impact on the racing record books is barely felt outside of the Cup series. When Gordon can win at Le Mans, any IRL or Champcar race, or anything outside of the Cup series, you let me know.

No Jeff Gordon is not the best driver ever nor will he ever be. Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr, David Pearson and Big Mouth Darrell Waltrip are all better drivers than Gordon will ever be.
