There was no Gettysburg war. There was the Civil War. It started when the north and the south disagreed over slavery. Obviously, the south wanted it. Their debates brought up the issue of states rights, because the south thought that when a new state was admitted into the Union, they should be able to choose whether or not to be a slave state through popular sovereignty. When President Lincoln was elected, the south decided to secede, but the north didn't let them.

the war officially started whan the Confederate (southern) army led by General Beauregard attacked Fort Sumter.

The Gettysburg from the American Civil War was the South's attempt to take the war to the North. General Robert E. Lee commanded for the South and General George Meade commanded for the North. Lee was something of a maverick and wasn't afraid to try innovative things while Meade was very cautious and careful. The battle ended in a Union (North) victory. Meade's caution prevented him from taking several opportunities to destroy Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Had he been successful in this, the war would have been shortened. There is no guarantee that he could have pulled it off in any case. Lee was a brilliant commander and might have been able to inflict a severe blow to the Union Army had Meade tried it. As it is, both sides bloodied each other and then withdrew. The North held the town and the South never again tried to invade the North.
