How do u get started in the music business by passing american idol?

i want to get started in the music business like singing R&B and country. I mean i can sing good. and would like to get started by singing. but don't know how to other than going through American Idol, how do i do it?

American idol is a load of tripe - it just makes manufactured one hit wonders out of pretty people which the music industry can fill with middle of the road songs and sparkles. All very well if you want your at most 1 year in the spotlight, but the way to success, be it moderate or stardom is through hard (very hard) work.

The way I've always been told to do it (reading articles on it and so forth) is you need to basically get your name and your music out there. Play as many gigs as possible. They're hard to get to start off with, so you'll probably need to do them for free or just expenses - however, once you've built a fanbase and a network of other artists you can get gigs with (supporting etc) agents and venues it is much easier. Record a demo CD as soon as possible - if you're a musician you should know someone who can get their hands on a studio - even a home studio would probably be ok. Once you've got that you of course need the obligatory myspace page, but also get some copies made to either hand out to venues/agents (be warned agents cost a lot and are often pretty bad at getting you gigs) so they can see what you're like. They are less likely to want to let you play unless they've heard what you're like.

I've been following these steps with a couple of bands and now we have a reasonably steady flow of gigs - so it does work. It just takes a lot of time and effort.

Get yourself involved with a band that you have heard and like, practice, practice and then practice some more. make a demo recording and send it to as many studios as you can find. It might be worth your while to go and see some of these folks and let them hear your recording. Good Luck!
