I would consider a gift of membership in the North American Fishing Club or B.A.S.S. they have club magazines and other things for the young fisherman.(and old) that are included with membership. Yearly membership isn't usually any more than a separate magazine subscription.

FLW outdoors, and Bassmaster are two magazines that will give you alot of info on tech. and new baits, also they have articles about different lakes and what the pro's used to catch them at certin times of the year. For example carolina riging a lizzard in the spring or a shakey head in the heat of the summer. Those tech. may not work on certin lakes or rivers at different times of the year, that's what they don't tell you. It all comes with time fishing. good luck

Florida Sportsman & In-Fisherman magzines.

FLA Sporstman has excellent inshore salt/offshore info ,(with the occasional freshwater article). In-Fisherman has tons of interesting Freshwater-inshore salt info.

(Field & Stream is an excellent mag, but has more hunting info than anything else.)

In-Fisherman... no question because it is applicable to wherever your fishing and whatever you're fishing for. Also, it is very in-depth while it is still easy to understand and fun to read. I don't know why others would recommend state and species specific magazines.

STS = Salmon Trout and Steelhead be my personal preference. "Game and Fish" magazine ain't bad, it gives one information specifcally for their particular state, for both fishin' and hunting. Below, have given' you their site ;)...
