after reading the 2 statements below, do you think that prayer should be silence, just allowing the heart to connect with God? i have grown up in the christian church and heard prayers that sound to me like the babbling talked about in matthew......

Gandhi said this about prayer "prayer needs no speech. it is in itself independent of any sensuous effort."

matthew 6:7-8: 'And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.'

If "your Father knows what you need before you ask him."

And he also knows just how faithful you are, or are not. (Being all knowing.)

What is the point in praying at all?

And what does God actually say about it? Or do we only have the words of men, recorded by men.

Could it be that prayer is just a form of meditative thought about a problem that allows ourselves to put things into a clearer perspective and work out our own solution as best we can.

Prayer does not have to be eloquent sounding or from an eloquent speaker, the beautiful thing about Christian prayer is we just try our best and the Holy Spirit does the rest, note:

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. - Romans 8:26,27.

Prayer can be how ever the Holy Spirit moves you to, it is after all talking with God, Unless you pray to false gods then it is just babbling and constant noise.

Prayer is conversing with God through Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5)

Jesus said it best in that scripture that you referenced......don't be loud and obnoxious when you pray......God hears you.

I think prayer should be mostly private, its my own thoughts and conversations with God or whomever. Just because it isnt outloud doesnt mean it is less valid

Normally we should pray out loud. The Bible refers to this. But there are situations where we need to pray in silence.

I don't think it should be silent. I think we don't always have to explain what we need to God since God already knows...but the important thing is to acknowledge the help and guidance.

Prayer is not for God its for you. God already know what you want but he wants you to ask its to keep you humble.
